Hi there I'm new. Been looking for a reason for my constant unbearable itching for years.

I am a type 2 diabetic with neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and hypothyroidism. I have been looking for an answer and a therapy for my constant itching for over 10 years, but none of my doctors have taken me seriously. I've changed doctors 3 times in a number of years. Does any one else suffer from itching, does anything help? If I could find an answer for that I might feel like getting out of bed in the morning ing.

Hi. I have all the problems apart from diabetes .. my doctor refered me to hospital to have allergy test for itching but nothing came up to all the normal allergies. I have to take fexofenadine every day which my doctor prescribed. If I miss a dose I certainly know it as the itching starts straight away. Hope you find something soon as I know how fed up you must be.

Hi Dany-begood1

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today?

Welcome to the forum and it is wonderful to make your acquaintance. I have pasted a link below to our mother site, FMA UK which hosts loads of useful Fibro information:

fmauk.org/

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you are suffering with an insatiable itching problem. I have pasted you a couple of post excerpts from ''LindseyMid'' from 3 years ago on this issue:

Fibro can make you more sensitive to anything, so if you have dry skin or allergies, you may feel the resulting symptoms more than you would without Fibro.

Fibro itself doesn't specifically cause dry skin though and allergies should be ruled out by a doctor. Some meds given for Fibro have itching as a side effect, for example.

3 years ago LindseyMid

It's very important that all symptoms not directly caused by Fibro are properly checked out, both in case they may be a sign of something else significant and so treatments can be targeted.

Itching can be caused by allergies and liver problems, for example, which may cause other issues if not dealt with. And if the itching is due to dry skin or eczema, then treatments for Fibro will not work on it.

"Monster lists" of Fibro symptoms cause a lot of trouble, because they lead people to believe that symptoms not directly caused by Fibro ARE a direct result of Fibro and so they do not get them checked out or treated.

If your GP can't identify what it causing this (e.g. one particular medication that you could consider coming off to see if it helps) then a referral to dermatology may be warranted. Some GP surgeries have one GP who is specialised in dermatology, so it is worth asking about this as it saves waiting for a consultant appointment,

I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

I used to suffer from very bad itching especially at night the doctor gave me Loratadine which I take one dose every night, no more problems - well with itching any way. If the itching is around your privates area that's down to the diabetes and I do find that talcum powder does help a little there.

Wow, you guys! Thanks for the info. I never expected so much response. I'm overwhelmed. Thanks to all of you. I've tried Zyrtec and Claritin and Benedryl if that's what these meds are. I used to take Xanax years ago for GAD and it worked also for itching. But I guess doctors are running scared here to prescribe it.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear you are getting itchy skin. I know how terribly uncomfortable that can be.

I take certirazine which you can buy over the counter. I only seem to need one every few days but without them the itching gets unbearable especially (but not limited to) the soles of my feet for some reason.

I would suggest checking with your doctor though just to make sure there's nothing else going on.

Hope you feel better soon.

It could be a reaction to medication. Tramadol makes me itchy. I didn't realise until i had my op that i had a bad reaction to morphine. Never experienced anything like it & i have eczema.

Also too much of a vitamin can do it. I take supplements & was taking too high a dose of cod liver oil.

Skin very sensitive with fibro which seems to amplify conditions i already had. Lots of fibres in clothes & bedding i cannot tolerate. Seem to live in bamboo & silk.

If anti histamine does not help i would contact rheumotology.

hmmmm, rheumatologist? Never thought of that. Thx

Sounds wonderful in theory. I went to my lovely dermatologist about a year ago and she said the same thing, she even gave me a bag of samples. None of them worked. Even Aveeno. I also tried out Cera-'ve an Gold Bond. Like I said, been trying for years. But I do appreciate every bit of knowledge I can get. Thx, Dany

I no longer eat Dairy, Wheat, Soy or any of it's derivatives !

Grains and Pulses are more or less stopped Rice also Potatoes are only a very occasional thing now, not an everyday occurrence, they can get the peristalsis going in my colon and give me pain in the duodenum!

My skin that I used to tear up scratching with desperate itching stopped, no longer itch!

I am no longer Bloated, and the pain of IBS is only an occasional thing that I can always find a dietary reason for.

This is not an easy or convenient or cheap thing to do. I use organic food as I can find.

I can no longer have the convenience of grabbing a sandwich and everything must be planned and home cooked. NOTHING comes in boxes or tins. and nothing processed.

I lost a few stone without even thinking about it but I was not really overweight to begin.

Now time for Breakfast,,, it's an Avocado and an apple and some assorted seeds! I will probably have an Orange or a few Cashews if I am peckish later.

Lunch is some Roasted Veg.

Dinner will be a Nicely spiced chicken stir fry and I do not eat after 7 pm.

It may sound strange to some saying that "my diet is healthier now than it has ever has been" but it is!, I could never go back to eating what is considered "normally".

What was my alternative,, just take what ever the Dr threw at me,, or even listen to their quackery!

Not the route for me!!

An over the counter remedy that helped my mum a bit til she finally got some decent medication for itching (after being triggered by drug for Gout,) listed by others here already.. Is Tea tree in a body lotion. It's very soothing. Qvcuk sell Australian Bodycare Teatree Lotion in a whopping big tube. DOES help. The Dermatologist I was seeing myself said to try any cream with menthol in til Mums referral came up..

Hope some of our suggestions help cos I know this is miserable.

Bestest wishes!

I use Tea Tree Oil shampoo on my hair. Never thought to use it on my skin.

Thx, Dany

They do a body wash too, but the body lotion is a moisturizer with Teatree oil in too. They also do wipes which Mum has found great when out or getting too warm which makes things worse..

Good luck!

Hi I am new to where is your itching all over or generalized to certain areas.

Sparkimoore profile image

Sorry, this is very disjointed.. Mum (90!) went to gp saying she couldn't continue with overwhelming itching all over, noticeably starting after gout meds prescribed. He fobbed her off.. Nothing to be done.. Skin damage. Can't prescribe ANYTHING.. (Bsta**) . Pharmacist recommended over the counter EURAX cream which has been wonderful.. She slathers it on each am & before bed & lasts most of day. THIS IS ON PRESC TOO! New GP referred her to Dermatologist & meantime prescribed her with hydrocortisone cream for specific bad areas, plus cetrizine, antihistamine. If she applies these daily, plus the tea tree for any breakthrough she's FINE! I'm so relieved cos it was so bad, & dear old Mum has been looking after ME cos I'm have severe breathing probs..

I do have some itching - feel like an old cat sitting there scratching- but never put too much thought into why. I know that when I take too much Echinacea I itch noticeably more. But have never itched to the point of despair. I do take Tramadol and have been for 15 years or so, I've never been off of them to see if it made a difference. Sorry cannot offer more than this,

I do hope you find an answer. Oh almost forgot. I'm very allergic to Voltarol ( Diclofenic) had a most dreadful burning fast spreading large rash, even just a small trace of Voltarol gel causes a reaction.

Him. Tramadol is also called Ultram right? I've taken it before too. It made my head feel buzzy and gave me a headache. I've got to make an appointment with an allergist. They gave me an address in Tacoma. That's too far away foe someone that doesn't drive. Will have to find someone here. There must be someone down this way.

Hey, you take care. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Dany, the only other name I know for Tramadol is Zydol. I think it gave me a very much slower thought process, bad memory too.

Good luck

Thanks, I think I'm taking way too many drugs. I would like to give some up but when in think about it I can't decide which ones I can do without. Thanks, Dany

Hi all, long time no talk to. I have since discovered that I have gastroparesis (partially paralyzed stomach muscles), and last September 2016 I had a heart attack. Right coronary artery was 99% blocked. Got 1 stent and more drugs. But I still itch. But I was doing research a few nights ago my antidepressant, Effexor causes itching. I have since started taking magnesium, and D3, also calcium. Now I'm wondering if I'm anemic. A year ago I had to have iron intravenously. I'm falling apart. 😱 I'd be happy to stop itching.

How are you guys. I hope all of you are hunky dory. 🎶😘😘😘😘😘🐦🐦🐦🐦🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
