Glucose gives you a kick start.....and reduces the time in "brain fog".

Hello everyone....

We like to share the positives as well as the things which blight our daily lives, so here is one for you.

(Apologies to those of you who already know about this, or who have to be careful to control the glucose levels....).

Not many chemists in England seem to stock boxes of powdered glucose any more ( is this because drug addicts use it ?). However, Lloyds Pharmacy do and Boots have it with "added Vit C". This may change, if more of us request it.

I remembered back to my sprinting days (was that really me????) when a couple of spoons of the stuff gave me the boost of energy before a race. So now, when I wake up from deep sleep, my OH gives me a glucose drink and it really does reduce the "fog" tine and the "lead limbs" most of us know about.

Pain is a separate issue, however....and I still have not found a non-drug method to reduce this. Relaxation methods certainly help in not escalating the pain level....but still have to endure it.

comments and ideas always welcome!

Interesting...never heard of that. I take a formula 303 for pain in my body. Chriopractor gave me. She said a lot of fibro patients like it. Its basically a combination of magnesium, Passionflora (herb for anxiety) and valerian root. Works pretty good. I take it when i am achy and in pain.

Thanks for that tip.

I'm guessing you are a "night owl" too?

This used to bother me and doesn't now. Pain is not so draining in these "wee small hours" and so I am able to do things I am unable to tackle in the mornings. I catch up on documentaries/dvds that my OH has no interest in. Read and enjoy music. Quality time with the cats ( who are often awake too..) and communicating with family in Oz, and fellow Fibros on here.....

p.s. Is formula 303 available OTC?

I started feeling 'grotty' at times and noticed that eating seemed to cure it. When I was in hospital, they tested me for diabetes. Next thing I know, they were bringing me lots and lots of sweet stuff. Apparently when I feel grotty, it is because my blood sugar is going too low.

I have now been told that 'pre-diabetes' has the symptom of your blood sugar going too low, instead of too high as in normal diabetes.

Another possible cause that might help, is that you might be becoming slightly dehydrated. This is a good find you have made and it might help a lot of us!

Yes Terry...I also discovered that I was not drinking enough fluids. Adults do need at least a litre of water per 12 hrs.

Yes Terry that we how hubby used to go if we were around the supermarket he used to have to go to the cafe and have a muffin and a creamy coffee (well that was his excuse ) and he had prediabetes. Unfortunately because of depression and circumstances (won't bore you) he did not change his exercise and eating latter so developed he full whammy.

Poundshops often have those glucose tablets, handy to keep around. I keep one of those little packets of shortbread in the glove department as it doesn't go all gooey like chocolate.x

Another sign I forgot to mention is blurry vision that seems to get better a while after eating/drinking.

They are now thinking that there is a genetic factor as well towards getting diabetes, not just overweight.

Yes I've noticed that - good old Lucozade (other glucose drinks are available) is still on the shelves until the sugar police get hold of it. I've found the zero calorie red bull (odd taste) does it though - I have to be careful as I carry a lot of weight. You used to be able to get the glucose tablets - have they gone too?

Glucose tablets are still around. I have hypoglycemia so they come in very handy when my alone sugar crashes. Pharmacies sell them and so do supermarkets.

Looby - you brought back a lovely warm memory -I used to love that glucose box..we always had one in the cupboard and when one of the family was unwell - Mom always used to put it on a teaspoon and give it to us like that..yes. we used to cough a bit but always tasted nice and had the water afterwards......could do with that today as its my 60th........to perk me up!

Happy Birthday CB !!! Hope it has turned out to be a GOOD day, not one of those horizontal zombie ones......

Your Mum's "medicine" was much kinder than my Mum's ....we used to get the dreaded cod liver or caster oil for every ailment! If it was a cold, then Beechams powders, which were even more revolting, and made me sick.

Glucose powder is always better diluted - it is absorbed by the body quicker.

Yes also had the castor oil and the smelly cod liver oil too...plus I think some orange syrup...can't remember the name....

in reply to CreakyBea

Could you be thinking of Minadex - they gave that to me when I was small, lots of surgery left my under weight and pale and (not so very) interesting. It stimulated appetite and tasted of oranges.

I want to sincerely wish you a belated happy birthday! I genuinely hope that you had a wonderful 60th my friend? :) :)

Fruit is useful as you don't get sugar spikes because of the added fibre but water can release energy from the body.

I keep easy peel oranges in my bag.

Ray....you cannot blame everything on the "burocrats in Brussels", as you call them.

If not enough customers buy a product, then it stops being produced. It is as simple as that.

Hi

Thanks for that interesting info.

Take care and best wishes.

Hi Looby

I remember a glucose drink being sold in pharmacies when I was a young lad. I cannot remember the name of it now but I am presuming that it went out of fashion as many hings do? I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Yes my friend, that was Lucozade you are remembering by the sound of it.

I had a sweet tooth, but funnily never liked it much. Something about the taste, like it was a bit 'salty'?

No it wasn't Lucozade it was something else and it looked like Lucozade? If I remember right I htink it had ''Barley'' in the title? My memory is awful these days! :)

Robinson's Barley Water?

What was that 'other one' that was a supposed to be a good mineral to drink, but I hated it? That was it, 'PLJ' (Pure Lemon Juice) and it tasted like it, how could anyone drink it I don't know, it was way too tart for me, as a kid. Maybe as an adult it would be OK?

This is a real test of my memory.

TheAuthor profile image
TheAuthor in reply to TerryT1

It could have been that? I remember PLJ as my mum use to drink it and it tasted foul!

Perhaps Lucozade is a regional thing? I've not been to the shops in a while, but it was quite common, even in small newsagents. They don't come n the big yellow-wrapped cellophane bottles now like they used to , but in smaller yellowy-orange glass bottles. They were 'repositioned' in the marketplace as an energy drink in the 80s for the young, not as a sort of medicine to provide energy to the sick.

Yes,it is still around, try going to the name with '.com' after it.
