I was referred by the person who diagnosed fibromyalgia. For some it may be their GP. I didn't find it helpful, just prescribed various painkilkers. A pain management clinic is better apparently as they offer a variety of methods such as tai chi or hydrotherapy.

I was referred by my orthopaedic consultant after fusion surgery was deemed to dangerous and could cause more problems than it solved.

It was my consultant at the hospital. good luck 😊

I was referred by my GP. Unfortunately the Pain Clinic only tends to deal with meds. and a few treatments. Mine were lovely but unfortunately that has even ended for me as I used to have electro acupuncture through them but when the Pain Specialist retired there was no replacement so no clinics, grhh! Good luck with it.x

I requested a referral through my GP.

I'm sure the service from a pain clinic will vary from area to area, however although some people say they were just prescribed medication, I found that they had the time to talk through medication options and I finally got nortriptylin, which has helped me greatly at night time. i don't think I would have been offered this by my GP as it is dearer than other options.

In addition, I was put on a 'Energy for life' course which helped me understand my fibro pain and gave me strategies to help control it, to manage flairs and to accept the changes that I've had to make in my lifestyle.

I suppose the key is to be aware of what is available and to ask for what you need when you get there.

The second rheumi that I saw has recommended that I try hydrotherapy at Manchester Royal Infirmary. As I live in Whitefield, the journey to MRI is so fraught that I think the travel problems will outweigh the benefits of the therapy. So it's worth getting the referral and asking what they can provide.........depending on where you live!

Good luck! Maggie x
