Learn from me I won the lottery and premium bonds on the same day and only cleared £27.60 what I should have asked for is the top prize. :-)

I have heard that their tea is not as nice as ours so their favourite teabags

Chocolate (cadburys etc..), Tomato Soup (heinz) and my friend said things like HP sauce and some pickles were things they missed. I would say Cheddar Cheese but I don't know whether you would be able to send it as it is a perishable. Other than that I don't know they said alot of things like that were available but were expensive.

That has now sent me to the fridge to see whether there is any cheese lurking around. First day in nearly 4 weeks since I started this flu that I have felt hungry. I am now yearning for cheese and want beefburgers and beans for my tea for some unknown reason haven't had that in months.xxx

I think they like our herbal teas so will send some of those. Sorry to hear you are unwell but being hungry is a good sign.

English mustard mint sauce hp sauce

Think scones and muffins are uk too but depends on the shelf life of what you are sending.

Be interested to know how its going to go through customs.

Betty67 profile image
Betty67 in reply to Lisahelen

Mustard powder and we thought of upmarket cake mix. Scones too short a shelf life. Portugese mum sends stuff here.

The mention of cheese makes me think it would also be a good idea to check what Portugal will allow in. A lot of countries have strict banned lists and some are really paranoid to the point of arresting you if you get it wrong. Biosecurity is a serious matter. It's not just the food, but infections and other unwanted hitch hikers that can travel with it. Did you ever experience this with Malta?

Betty67 profile image
Betty67 in reply to fenbadger

No as always coming from EU but they did not like chickend or eggs.

I know here security won't allow a lot of things! Take Florida fruit it can't be sent through mail to anywhere. If you want Florida fruit you have to go to Florida. If you try to take it out of that state and get caught with it. The fines can really add up quickly!

Betty67 profile image
Betty67 in reply to Regnofibro1

Did not know that. Watch TV programmes on Australia they took fruit and veg very seriously, love watching the faces of people pretending to be surprised when they founf stuff in their suitcases.

Florida fruit is taken very seriously! Now California fruit can be shipped anywhere! But honestly it's not any where near as good. Of course it seems like most of our fruit comes from Mexico !

Betty67 profile image

Thing that surprised me was the quality of fruit and veg in Poland so much better than it was in Gozo. There you had to check your purchases very carefully.

British food to Portugal that is being posted.

For my son's partner's family.

The s there something that your son or daughter in law likes that they can't get or is too expensive in Portugal?

Hope you get sorted :)

Betty67 profile image
Betty67 in reply to

Do not think they have tried much of our food, don't think they have been to UK.

in reply to Betty67

In that case you could make up a parcel of non perishables but quintessentially British :)

Christmas cake. Or pudding

Look for the label. By appointment to her majesty the queen. Heinz products etc

Heinz products? Really? Wow

Betty67 in reply to Lisahelen

Christmas cake a good idea, decorated one. ( small)

in reply to Betty67

If you are going with a Christmas theme, what about a pudding to go with the cake and some all butter Scottish shortbread. A Jam that is made in England along with an English marmalade. :)

A proper Bakewell PUDDING

PROPER Clotted cream

Cornish pasties allegedly all survive the post but I don't know about going to hotter climes.

A Portuguese acquaintance of mine always brings special biscuits whenever she goes home for a visit :)

Betty67 profile image
Betty67 in reply to fenbadger

Oh you have mentioned my favourite things. A Cornish friend use to put clotted cream in her pasties. A-Maze-ing.

If it was me doing this I would go with classic Britishness! HP Sauce, Tea Bags, Victoria Jam Sponge Cake, Ready Salted Crisps, Wholewheat Chocolate Biscuits and a Christmas Pudding would be included!

This sounds great fun! x x

We are preparing a barrel to be shipped to our parents in Jamaica. They left the UK in 1979 and moved to the USA and then retired to Jamaica in 2003. They totally miss English food and sweet. So far we have added:

Steak & Kidney pudding (Fray Bentos microwaveable)

Rice Pudding

PG Tips

Heinz baked beans

Hp brown sauce

Tomato ketchup

Quavers

Curly Wurly

Murray Mints

Zaflora

Radox

Mother desperatley wants me to find a way of sending Walls pork sausages and dad wants kippers.

Good list. Thanks. I can understand missing " proper" sausages.
