Hiya Michelle, I've been on amitrytaline for a few years now, I take them about an hour before bedtime to help me sleep through. What dosage are you on and are you taking them in the daytime? If so I would stop and take them in the evening before going to bed. Hope this helps you good luck. Paula x

The grogginess will stop you need to give them time. What dose are you on? Paula x

Hi Michelle, I have been on 50mgs of amitriptyline for several years now and I find it a great help for helping me sleep - if I take it early in the evening then I find it stops the groggy feeling the next day. What dosage are you currently taking? It does take a while for you to get used to any new meds, but I found that the benefits of sleeping through most nights outweighed any problems at the start. Good luck and gentle hugs, Julie xxx

I take the alternative to Amitriptyline, which is called Nortriptyline as this does not contain a sedative. It may be worth discussing other medication options with your GP?

Take care

I'm on Notriptyline - 50mg daily - and find it very good for helping me sleep. I take it at 7pm, usually go to bed about 10pm and get up about 7.30am (I'm retired). I started on 10mg of Amitriptyline - for 8 months, then, as it wasn't really doing anything, my GP prescribed 25mg Nortriptyline for a month, before he raised it to 50mg. I can honestly say I haven't had one of those bad nights - awake for hours - while I've been on it, so it is well worth a try. Make sure you take it about 12 hours before you need to get up.

I'm on a low dose but I stopped because it wasn't really helping, but I don't think I gave it long enough really

I've heard nortriotaline are better, anything for some sleep or pain relief I think

I seemed to get night sweats from amiltriptaline and other anti depressant meds xx
