Tomatoes?

Hollytree profile image

Does anyone else find tomatoes make their fibro worse? I have arthritis as well and someone told me to stop eating toms and other red fruits. Annoying as I love them, especially the sundried ones. But it does seem to have helped.

I hope this doesn't extend to other red fruits like raspberries and cherries or that will make for a tedious summer.

I have not come across this for fibro, but tomatoes do make my IBS worse.

Likewise, and IBS seems to be linked to fibro. I'm told its the nightshade family so peppers, aubergines are out too. Does this include potatoes as they're in the same family?

Garlic is an allium and the active ingredient is allycin, leeks are better if you must have onions.

If oxalate is a problem then Rhubarb must be guilty as is spinach. I remember changing my daughter's nappy after trying her on spinach. We then decided to wait until she was potty trained :P

I would imagine sun dried tomatoes concentrate the active ingredient (capsaicin). See also Ken's reply on red fruit.

Please don't think food is going to have to be boring in future.

Good luck.

Along with tomatoes i cant eat bananas or lettice, they all give me heartburn

My biggest problem is fat, i am ok with veggie oil but animal fats cause all sorts of digestive problem. I can often get around it by only eating a little and then drinking a tiny glass of my home made ginger and lemon cordial.

I once gave my baby son a tin of baby food, stewed prunes.

I only did it once. That was enough. I wont say never again because i used it as baby laxative after that..

Hugs sue

Ouch, it's not easy cutting off all the fat from meat but at least you can drain it off mince etc. I find it restricting, and some cuts are rubbish without a bit of fat :(

Hi Hollytree, I was told this in a health food shop once - never tried it really but I love tomatoes too, yes, same, prefer the sun dried, might have to think a bit more about trying this, xx

Have read all kinds of elimination theories and tried a few give them about eight weeks if there is no noticeable difference then back to trying to keep as balanced diet as possible.

Tomatoes, red meat and spicy food have all been labelled as possible triggers for RA with little scientific evidence mostly anecdotal diet suggestions.

Tomatoes are high / medium Oxalate dependant on how processed. Suggest you do research on this.

Yes, Holly I tried eliminating white potatos and tomatos as they are both fromdeadly nightshade family, which I read are not good for athritis. When I eat tomatos especially, pain Iis worse everywhere. I love fresh tomatoes too, but always noticed they stung my hands when preparing them.

garlic, peppers, aubergine and a few others are also in this family.

Tomatoes are part of the capsaicin family (also includes peppers, aubergines, chilli's and potatoes). They can all be trigger foods for sensitive people.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this. From what I have read so far there is a lot of conflicting info about what are low and high foods. As a vege for over 35 years, there doesn't seem to be much left for me to eat especially as I don't tolerate animal fat foods like cheese or yogurt well.

All those luscious red fruits removed from the menu along with tea and chocolate!

I might give it a go, though!

Hi Hollytree

I have never personally come across this in connection with Fibro, and I am allergic to all red fruits as I have Herticaria M28 (red fruit allergy).

All my hopes and dreams for you

I got a book on fibro years ago, advice in that said any fruit/veg from the nightshade group aggravate fibro, I reduced but never removed these from my diet! I can cope with that, I also went to see jan de friės & he said stay off pork as that is a dirty meat which I don't eat much of anyway so that was easy also citrus fruit as the acidity is aggravating the condition again I've not removed totally but know when I have it my pain will be worse for a few days but I don't let it keep me indoors I go to the swimming pool I get great relief & comfort from doung that! Take care, hugs x

Many thanks for all the suggestions and replies. I'll carry on researching the oxalate aspect and see how it goes.

I find walking helps most things- just short walks. Not sure if it is the exercise or just being out and about.

Take care all.
