but if I take more 4 or say 5 hours later, I feel really ill, can't even stand as so dizzy. The consultant now wants me on Gabapentin or Pregabalin. If they have the same side effects as Tramadol, I don't think I can take it.

Hi is it just me or do a lot of others feel sick and dizzy after taking tramadol? I'm okay with the first morning dose...
Hi Flossy
My friend was the same with Tramadol but found that if she took just one tablet at each dose it wasn't so bad but the first week she was on it she had very strange side effects like seeing people who she knew couldn't be there and having strange sweats, etc. I came off it as it gave me a 24/7 strange headache and I just could not concentrate on anything and felt naff. I am on Pregablin but the doctor was sensible and started me on a very low dose of just the 25mg tablets and built up to the dose I am now on. I will not lie to you the first 2 weeks I just literally sat in the chair with no energy and everything was happening in slow motion but I was just glad to be in less pain. I stuck with it as I had felt so ill before and gradually my body got used to it and it has definitely helped with the burning and shooting pains but not with the overall aches. Everyone is different and you might find that Pregablin suits you much better. I am afraid I can't help you with Gabapentin as I have never been prescribed that. Good luck with whatever you try I sincerely hope it will reduce your painx
Hi rosewine, I have decided to give the new meds a go and will discuss low starting dose with my doctor. Thank you for your advice. I am having a cataract removed tomorrow so will ring him on Monday. Xx
Hi flossy1
I am so sorry to read that you are having this problem and I genuinely hope that you can find some resolution and relief to this problem.
I have pasted you the NHS Tramadol link below and it does say that nausea is one of the common side effects:

It may be worth discussing this issue with your GP?
All my hopes and dreams for you

I always get very nauseous and dizzy with Tramadol, and thought it just wasn't for me.
But I tried it again when nothing else seemed to help, hoping for relief if I got used to it, but still it makes me feel very ill. I only take it at night because of that. It makes me unable to even sit up or stand for longer than a literal minute or two at a time or I will feel a cold sweat and feel very sick, and I have to lay down somewhere. It does take the edge off the pain, but I can't function. I only take one 50mg.
My pain doc gave me the smallest dose of promethazine (phenergan, 12.5mg) to help with nausea. It diminishes the sick feeling, but I still feel a little bad. The next day I feel drowsy and even more worn out, but at least I can stand up for longer than a minute.
I am still trying to find something so that I don't have to take Tramadol at all, and be able to get at least some relief without feeling so badly. I just can't afford to be in bed all day.
Hi flossy
I struggle to take full strength Tramadol it makes me violently sick and dizzy. I take a lower dose drug called Tramacet which is a lower dose of Tramadol together with Paracetamol, of course if you take this one you must not take other tablets containing Paracetamol. I have not had any side effects at all from Gabapentin - Gentle hugs x
