Doctors suggested I go on these tablets to help with fibromyalgia it is called nortriptyline 10 mg. Has anyone been on them, did they work or were there loads of side effects, not got them yet.

Very old medication that has been around for years

Nortriptylin is the same really as amertriplin it's just

A bit more milder.

Both work well, but you get used to taking them

So have to up the dose, they are prescribed a lot for

Us you will have a good sleep,

I found that after taking them for a while that both gave

Me head aches so I stopped, but that is not every one

And you may find then very good.

As far as I'm aware they are not addictive, I still take them

Some times if I need to sleep but not often.

Please don't be put off because they do work and for

You might be wonderful.

Good luck

Viv

Hi Vivien

If you need to take more of them they are most certainly addictive

in reply toKirby

No they are not addictive, like most medication your body gets used to taking

It, so it does not work as well

So you need to up the dose

Hi, I used to work in the field of addictions and that is exactly what physical addiction is - ie your body becoming tolerant and ergo needing more to get the same effect.

in reply toKirby

It's a small world I work in a prison for the same reason

I expect every area has different views on this, in

My view addiction means that you can't do without

and if you stop your body

Goes into withdrawel. Which can make you very

Ill.

But I expect you are right

I don't know very much

Hi Vivien - interesting to hear about your work. You are right about the withdrawal symptoms. Addiction is very complicated, isn't it? Maybe tolerance is the word I was looking for rather than addiction though addiction has an element of physical and psychological dependence as you will know. It was a long time ago I worked in the field anyway but it was quite rewarding. I mainly worked on evaluating projects.

Ken might answer that when he sleeps off his bourbons. NOR is the same as AMI but different. apparently different (less?) side effects. How about looking on NHS choices website? you'll find patient notes on many medicines.

Yeah I finally slept off those biscuits and answered! Thank you my friend.

Hi Jan

I took these when in my early twenties as an anti-depressant but to also help me sleep they helped with sleep but it was long ago when I was young and naive so can't really give up to date comments. It does say that it i used for nerve pain too which is why it will be offered to fibro sufferers

This link gives all the medication info:

I thought you may be interested in these Posts from the past which discuss nortriptyline and its effects:

Sending fibro busting flufffies to you Jan

Hi,

I've been on them for about a year, they are supposed to help relax the muscles ,I think that's what I was told .......if I'm wrong sorry fibro fog!! I've taken 40mg (that's 4 tablets). Can't say I've had any side affects. Good luck, hope they help you, but if you are not confident about them, could you not air your concerns to your GP? You have a right to be sure of what you are going to put in your body!

Gentle hugs x

Hi litteljan

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I take 50mg of Nortriptayline daily, it really is the same as Amitrirtyline but without the sedative, so it is easier to use long term. The drug has a maximum daily intake of up to 150mg.

I have pasted you a link about the drug form NICE. I hope that you find it useful.

All my hopes and dreams for you

I have paradoxical effects to medication so Nortriptyline stopped me sleeping altogether, its the same with all medicines that are meant to cause drowsiness except for Diazepam and Clonazepam - and I have a less disrupted sleep without those as well. Its not actually milder than Amitriptyline, both depend on the dosage that you take, you can take a low dose or a high dose, but it is meant to have fewer side effects.
