Hi Annie :)

I was wondering if you had posted on this forum by mistake Annie as this is FibroAction for fibromyalgia :)

May I kindly suggest another Health Unlocked Forum called Ovacome where they will be better advised to advise you.

I, personally, think this is a general feeling amongst most women but once the test is done its done. By not having it things like cancer will go undetected and be more difficult to treat.

I find the test both awkward and very painful but since having pre-cancerous cells removed I endure it for the sake of my health!

I think its natural to have a fear when having tests BUT not having a smear is the worst thing you can do , in my opinion .

Not having a smear wont change the fact of your body ie if you have something wrong or not ,but it can put your mind at rest or if you have something wrong, your giving yourself the best chance of being successfully treated.

Also not having it done when you know you should will probably increase your anxiety the longer it goes on.

Most likely your fine but so important to have it done.

Feeling anxious isn't a nice feeling I know but please have it sorted xxx

Hello Annie67,

I understand your concerns but I really think it is a routine screen that all woman should consider having. We are more than happy to chat with you about your anxiety surrounding thi`s procedure as we have ladies here however the main discussion on this community is surrounding the symptoms of Fibromyalgia run by the charity FibroAction.

I wondered if you may receive better advice & support from the community Ovacare as they may be able to speak to you further about the importance of this screening. I would imagine the members there have better understanding and have had many experiences to explain the screening process to you.

Dear Annie, I think all women will empathise with you on this but really, for the sake of your health and sanity, you MUST go ahead and have this done. There will be two outcomes: either you will get the all-clear or a positive diagnosis will be made. In either case, you will have been proactive in protecting your health. I felt exactly the same about having my first mammogram - frightened of the unknown, the dreadful possibility of cancer, the embarrassment and possible pain. Did I have breast cancer? Yes, I did. And you know what? In so many ways it was the best diagnosis I could have had. True, the treatment was pretty awful but it made me reassess my entire life and what I believed in and I am now a far better person for having gone through the experience. That was 7 years ago and I'm still here to tell the tale. My life has improved so much since then and my mind set is now one of positive belief. PLEASE set aside your fears and get this test done. It only takes a minute and then it's done. As suggested on other posts, do please consult other experts and/or forums because you will find that a positive diagnosis is absolutely NOT the end. Life DOES go on. I wish you all the best and send positive and healing thoughts your way. xxx

Excellent response Yorkshiregirlie,

I felt incredibly motivated and empowered after reading it and although my issues are not about smears, I do struggle (putting it mildly) with needles so in some ways, it applies to many of us who procrastinate and avoid what we know we should do to be proactive in protecting our health.

Thank you for your sage words.

Hi Annie

I totally understand. I have had the same fear myself. But now it is the fear of the pain of the smear itself. In fact, my GP couldn't complete my last smear because it was so painful for me and my muscles clenched. I think it is the fibro which causes me to experience so much more pain than others.
