How quickly does Omeprazole work?

I've just been prescribed Omeprazole for acid reflux. I've to take one 20mg tablet a day. I've only had two doses and still don't feel much better. How long does it take to start to feel better on these? When is the best time of day to take them anyway?

Hi, Newaygirl,

I would say that it should start to work within about 5 days. I have been taking Omezrapole for about 5yrs., and the advice I was given by the Gastroenterologist who prescribed it was to take it with a glass of water, at the same time each day, half an hour before food. I have found it to be very effective. Of course you must check the directions on the label, as they will be specifically for you. Hope you get some relief soon.

Hi newaysgirl, I take omeprazol 20mg twice daily as I have Barratts Osophegus, if you take gabapentin or pregbalin you have to take the omeprazol 2hours before the GABA or Preg, you also mustn't take any other antacids at the same time, and as gins has said it's worth 5 stars they are good.....hope you soon get some relief..gentle hug..Dee x

It took about 5 days, but I also did the following natural methods at the same time which I think helped. Drink fennel tea (Pukka Teas make a good detox tea which contains fennel, you can buy it in Tesco) or chew a few fennel seeds. Drink lots of water. I also took a teaspoon of Manuka honey 4 x daily (use the Manuka 15 or above - it's expensive, but anything below that doesn't have medicinal strength & I use it for medicine only). These natural things will kill the bacteria in your gut which cause inflammation & ulcers. I take diclofenac & I think they were maybe rotting my stomach lining. I don't like taking Omeprazole for too long because it lowers hydrochloric acid (essential for digesting your food) & after a while your body is 'tricked' into thinking it's under-producing hydrochloric acid, & so produces more! & then you end up taking more Omeprazole etc etc, a vicious circle. I found it helpful short-term though, & my tummy has now settled down, but now try to rely on these natural methods which helps a lot. I always have the Omeprazole in the cupboard, just in case!

Hi, that's a very good tip, thanks very much. I really hate to have to take prescription drugs due to side effects such as you mention- a vicious circle! I will indeed try your natural tips and hopefully won't become reliant. Its not been 5 days yet so I've had to continue taking some gaviscon (well away from my omeprazole dose of course) Thanks very much. Nwg x

I have taken various makes of similar drugs and i'd say around five days too, it depends how bad the problem is i guess. I also take Gaviscon Advance as and when i need it asa top up.

I dont think any of this range of drugs is harmful to you as really they are to counteract the side effects of all the other meds we take xx

Question, can acid reflux be stopped for good? Because I also take omeprazole but 4 times a day and burscupan twice three times a day. I feel constipated too, can acid reflux be stopped permanently?

As soon as you get up in a morning & before any food. Some people are on 2 a day and take the other one before their tea.

The label says don't take it more than 14 days in a row. Since we only eat out on the weekends, I take my first dose on Wednesday around 5:30pm and then take another one at the same time Thursday and Friday. If I think we are going out Saturday, I take one then too. This way I only use it when I may be eating spicy or oily foods. It takes at least a day or two to protect you and seems to stay in my system about 24 hours. I used to take it in the morning before coffee, but I found taking it a few hours before dinner works for me. I haven't had any acid reflux at night since since starting this regiment.
