I would like to thank all that urged me to go to the doctors when I posted previously about my continuing worsening fatigue. I have now been to my doctors had the blood tests and have found I have a folic acid deficiency so am now on tablets to rectify this. I would urge anyone who is suffering with worsening fatigue to see the doctor and get some help

hi,so glad you are sorted...I advise anyone to just take control of our health and not be fobbed of by docs etc putting everything down to fibro...age etc..as its not..as you and I and I suspect loads of others have found out..xx

Yes, I really ought to see one of the GPs...I havent been for a very long time. They have asked for blood tests twice before but it involves fasting from the previous evening. My problem is that (a) I'm usually unable to get to sleep till at least 3 am, sometimes later...and (b) I feel exhausted and dizzy in a morning. I always feel better when I've eaten...so I guess that means my blood sugar levels are low when I first get up. I dont drive and live alone and I dont know how I'm gonna cope with travelling in a morning when I feel so ill. A disabled friend used to have someone come to the house to take bloods. I think maybe I should ask the GP about this. Not long ago, the fatigue was horrendous.

It would be great if you could get someone out to take your bloods. I too do not sleep it is usually gone 0200hrs before I nod off then I am up 2-5 times in pain before I give up and get up anywhere from 0530hrs. Anything the doctor can do to help is a bonus and if you could get your bloods taken and find there is something that will help a little it would be fantastic.

I'm trying to refurbish my house but I dont drive and carpet shops and d.i.y. shops arent all on a direct bus route...so I have to wait till a friend is available to take me. It's frustrating that you cant get on with your life like 'normal' people. Mostly I have little energy till around 4pm...I think with many of us, our melatonin levels are out of sync There are sites specifically for the correct mix of supplements for fibro and ME/CFS but I havent found any in the UK so far. I think you cant go wrong with CoQ10 & fish oils. I havent taken any supplements for a while but I found selenium helpful and acetyl el carnitine with alpha lipoic acid. Now there seems to be a lot of talk about Vitamin D. I'm on the State Pension and these supplements arent available on the NHS unfortunately.

Hello DEstiletto, I've read the advice that Dee was giving you, and she knows your not 70! She was just telling you what she buys for her age group and what you can buy for your age group, that was all! You don't sound happy with what she has told you!! Aisha x

I have been prescribed folic acid on NHS due to folic deficiency and basically all that is is a vitamin D deficiency so may be worth looking into. Also my daughter suffers with fibro and high lv of fatigue she is also prescribed a multitude of vitamins

Hi all this has been really interesting to read. My fatigue and leg pain is a lot worse recently which I've put down to my fms but this post has made me think! Going to ask gp to run some blood tests this week. It's such a good point that we should all be mindful not to put everything down to the fibro before being checked out! Thank you

I hope you get a positive response even if it means going on some sort of vitamins if they work its all good. I have had 10 years being fobbed off by doctors and since I have been moaning at them I have found that some of the pain and fatigue I suffer are down to arthritis and vitamin deficency.

I am so sorry to hear you are feeling this bad, I understand how much the fatigue can get you I had a friend who spent the best part of 6 months in bed because of it. All I can really suggest that may help is a regular healthy diet, you say you have a choice some days feed the cats or yourself. You need to eat regularly to have any chance of beating fatigue. Also try to set your body clock so you can get a good 6-8 hours rest at night ( hard I know as I only get 2-3 hours a night due to pain). Lastly pester your doctor they are there to help you. If you have trouble getting your point across take a friend with you and keep seeing them until they help.

Thank you for your reply I had a care plan meeting with social worker team I'm being refered to an out reach service to help with things I'm struggling with and once my GP is changed my support worker will take to meet new one get things looked at I try to eat steam veg and fruit and other foods but if in paralysis I land up no one knows what's happened to me and left with no fluids or food what I've done is gave out keys to mum and two friends and getting a box fitted that ill buy for if no one can get me and I can't move or let ppl know how I am theirs going to be a key put in box with code made for who ever needs to get in to me for social work etc hoping carer up and running by next year so fingers crossed thanks for advice ill keep fighting to be heard gentle hugs keza x

I also went to the doctor with severe fatigue, and was tested for all kinds of deficiency, I was fine for everything except folic acid, even vitamin D, and had about 4 months of high dosage to put it right.

I have no idea why I was so low, as I really do eat a healthy diet. Now my nails are so bad that they are peeling down to the quick, .could be time for another check up!

Hiya, following this thread with interest (why else would I be here, Duh!) and wonder if any1 can tell me, Is folic acid deficiency a female-specific tendency, or does it affect men too? (Q. because I associate folic acid with pregnancy issues, but that prob just my ignorance.)

hog2203 profile image
hog2203 in reply toSnagglePuss

I am a 43 year old male all my life I thought folic acid was just prescribed to pregnant women until I was given it, so I guess a folic deficiency can be found in any age of sex

Thanks very much for the response, my (male) friend is experiencing fatigue problems (and is too pig-headed to go to his doctor, Grrrrr!) so trying to solve his constant 'feeling 2nd-hand' issues. You may just have helped :-))
