Hi You would be better if you asked a benefits advisor at least they will steer you in the right direction
thank you tracey, this is the first time i have been in this position in 30 years of work and it is a minefeild
I was "let go" from work 5 years ago just through appointments etc and ever since then living on nothing and trying to get DLA , just been turned down again. I use crutches when i can other than that i am in a wheelchair and a mobility scooter. So if you do get any help or if any one knows how i can get some help PLEASE can you let me know .
i was in the same position as you last month and now am on esa benefit as well as dla lower rate care. you can get esa if you have made enough contributions, which it sounds like you have and contribution esa is not means tested.
Hi!
I had to give up work in 2004 due to several health problems. As already mentioned, you can apply for Disability living Allowance. There are 2 parts to this benefit, neither of which are affected by income and based solely on health problems....depending on circumstances you can apply for Mobility or Daily Care DLA ( or both! These are awarded at different levels, I get Highest Rate for Mobility and Lowest Rate for Daily Care). DLA is very hard to get, but you can appeal if knocked back first time, and can get help with this from Social Services or Citizens Advice.
For Income and living expenses I receive Income support, and if you are long term sick you receive an additional £28 pound per week on top of what law says you need to live off to help pay for health expenses....as with normal Income Support you can still work upto 15 hrs per wk, but need to keep benefits informed of all work you do.
Previous person mentioned esa which is sometimes new name for income support, they mentioned contributions but this is not always necessary as I didn't have enough contributions so it can be based on your Income instead if this applies to you...so should be able to get it whether made enough contributions or not depending on what money you do have coming in to live off.
I was at work when I became ill and like you was on SSP but when that finished I had to put in a claim for Incapacity Benefit, which is now known as Employment and Support Allowance, which I am now in receipt of.
I would suggest that you contact your local Jobcentre Plus Office, or check out direct.gov.uk/benefits which should provide all the information you will require to claim for Employment & Support Allowance and also Disability Living Allowance. hope this helps Kim x
