13dp5dt - suspecting a chemical

Hi ladies, I was over the moon to have my first ever BFP a few days ago on my OTD (9dp5dt) from my 4th transfer. However, on 11dp5dt, my repeat test looked the same as my day 9 test. My clinic only provide 2 urine tests and in the case of a BFP they told me they don't do a blood test (which I was surprised about) and I would just wait for the viability scan at 7 weeks. I bought a couple of urine tests so I could check the lines 48 hours apart again - I feel like the first one on 13dp5dt looks a bit weak (attached), the next one will be tomorrow. We have also ordered 2 finger prick blood tests online and awaiting them to be delivered later this week to test bloods 48 hours apart. We probably won't know these results until next week.

Is it possible at this stage for the test line to still be light at this stage and result in a viable pregnancy? After my 2nd urine test on day 11 I instantly had a feeling this is a chemical. I really don't want to wait weeks for a scan to show me there's a non-viable pregnancy and I'm so tempted to stop the meds and move on, but I also dont want any doubt in my mind.

Has anyone else been in this situation and what was the outcome? Has anyone stopped their meds before their viability scan? Or would this be not advised in case it somehow could be viable? I am so stuck with what to do and losing the will.

Thanks for any information, this forum has helped me so much. Xxx

I think that line on those tests is quite good. That brand aren't amazingly sensitive.

While I don't think anyone can give you a definitive yes or no as to whether your pregnancy will continue, those tests can 100% can be lighter or darker in the early stages dependent on even how much water you have drunk, time of day, batch of test etc. the lines can also definitely vary between brands, certainly for a good while yet!

I found a couple of days wasn't enough time to show much of any difference on a test anyways so really wouldn't stop my meds based on this.

In my own experience when I had a chemical pregnancy through ivf, the tests were very very negative by a few days after test day. Not a hint of line (positive on the Friday, test day but very negative by Monday- I don't know if that helps).

If it were me, I would wait and retest again in a few days and if you have a negative test in a week or so, then contact the clinic and stop the meds. I completely understand how stressful this is but taking the meds for a few more days and then retesting really won't hurt

Having a clear positive test like the one in your picture is a great sign though and is a good reason to hold on to hope yet.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hi Kittykat198 thank you so much for your response and for sharing your experience. This has been so helpful for me. I'll try not to get so hung up on seeing progression on the tests (I am also using cheap Poundland tests which might not help!) and give it a few days before urine testing again. Unfortunately the private blood tests haven't even been dispatched yet due to the Easter break. It's such torture! xxx

Hi lovely sorry you’re facing this worry. I think doing the blood tests 48 hours apart will be what gives you most information and then hopefully you can discuss with your clinic about what to do regarding continuing meds. Urine home tests aren’t designed to check for progression as the level of dye in each test batch or brand can vary as well as lots of other factors about how much HCG reaches your urine. Crossing fingers for you.

Hi Endofitall thank you so much for your response, this is super helpful. I am getting so hung up on seeing progression but in reality I am using cheap Poundland tests, hopefully they will get darker over the next week. I am desperate for the finger prick tests to arrive ASAP but they haven't even been dispatched yet :( hopefully it will declare itself over the next week xxx

This looks like a pretty good line. My chemicals were always so faint you could barely see it.

this is still a strong line please do not stop your meds! The worry is if the same type of tests continue to get lighter lines a few days from now it doesn’t always need to be a dye stealer to be viable 🤗 xx

Hi Twiglet2 thanks so much for your reply, this is so helpful. I checked again this morning and it maybe seemed a bit darker, but definitely not lighter! I am just so worried that it should be darker/visibly progressing compared to some of the other posts I've seen. Hoping to have some blood results by the end of this week/early next week xxx

I wouldn’t be stopping the meds until you at least have the results of one blood test. I’ve had 3 chemicals and my HCG was always low (65, 45 and 33). I was told to keep taking meds until after the second blood test. The third time I stopped after the first blood test because I knew an HCG of 33 was way too low (for me), however plenty of people have gone on to have healthy babies with an initial low HCG so definitely proceed with caution if you do stop the meds. I probably wouldn’t recommend it unless you know your body even then it’s a risk!

Hi chocchoc12 thanks for your reply and for sharing your experiences, I am sorry for what you went through. I will be sure to stay on the meds until I have more info about what's going on. I tested again this morning and the line seemed slightly darker if anything - I just thought that by now the line would be dark and the progression would be obvious xxx

Hang in there, keep taking your meds. Your line looks good for this stage and there are so many variable for a urine test. Your bloods will be a better gauge. Sending hope ✨🙏xx
