Empty sac at 6wks 4 days

hello,

I was feeling very anxious and couldn’t wait until my viability scan on 28th April so decided to book a private one which I went for on Thursday. I would have been 6 weeks 4 days but there was only an empty sac, with no yolk sac or foetal pole. I know that it’s very unlikely that the pregnancy will be viable and that we should have been able to see something at this stage but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy? I’ve to go for a scan at the hospital on Thursday.

Hi Louanne, no advice from me but I just wanted to say I hope your ok and I can’t imagine how stressful this is for you. Try to stay positive, did you have a hcg blood test prior or any symptoms? Try to keep yourself surrounded by things and people you love during this tough time💖x

Thank you for replying. Didn’t have any bloods taken. On my OTD I used a clear blue digital that said 1-2 weeks, a week later it changed to 2-3 weeks and 8 days after that it went to 3+ so was feeling really hopeful. I’ve had no spotting or any indication of miscarriage but the sonographer who did the private scan said she’d definitely expect to see more at that stage. The nurse at the hospital told me it’s likely a missed miscarriage. It was our final embryo so gutted but just need to try accept that it wasn’t meant to be. We know we’re so blessed to have our daughter, from out first cycle of IVF 💕 xx

hi Louanne, happened to me with the exact same dates. Complete empty sack, was told the same thing should have seen more. The worse week of my life. Rescanned week later and my beautiful baby was there. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I wish you all the best ❤️

Thanks so much for replying. Was it a frozen embryo transfer you’d had? I’m just worried the dates can’t be wrong with ivf but I’ll try keep hopeful that there could be a change on Thursday 🙏🏼 xx

yes a frozen embryo transfer. I will never forget the sonograper telling me to expect a bleed/blighted ovum. Maybe to stop meds. They are not always right and everyone’s body is different. My daughter is proof of that! Miracles can happen I remember seeing a big Empty sac and thinking no chance as there’s nothing there.

Hi, Louanne please stay positive till the day you have a hospital appointment. In the same period as me I had a private scan and what they saw is one sack, my bladder was empty when I had to bleed and saw my GP she said the scan is not correct and sent me to the early pregnant unit for another scan then it shows to sacks. I'm just saying you never know why and this second scan turns out to give you a good and correct result. Praying for you.

I had a blighted ovum as well. It sucked and messed me up mentally a bit but if it's any consolation, I did get pregnant 3 months later and she is 18 months now. Apparently, blighted ovum is quite common and not a major red flag. Good luck!

My clinic didnt offer scans until at least 7 weeks for this reason, a day or two can make all the difference x
