pregnancy of unknown location

Hi all,

I had a FET on the 7th of March and a positive test result from that. I started having brown discharge at around 5 weeks of pregnancy which stopped after 2 days and then at 6 weeks started again with dark brown discharge. On the 1st of April I started bleeding heavily for around an hour after having pain in my lower right side for 3 hours and rushed to A&E where they did nothing just took a pregnancy test and my blood pressure… my actual scan date was today but I couldnt rest after the bleeding which even though it stopped it continued like spotting so I got a private scan last night and they confirmed they cannot see a sack.

Today I went for my first scan which was the planned one at the fertility clinic and they confirmed the same and they saw something which wasn’t there before next to the right ovary and sent me to EPU for further investigation and blood tests. They gave me the pregnancy of unknown location leaflet and told me my hcg level today as 6 weeks and 3 days is 945. They scheduled me back in for another test on Saturday morning .

im devastated and I’m reading so much about why did this happen and why would I have an ectopic pregnancy and I am feeling lost. I’m afraid that since this happened the risk of the next transfer being ectopic is even higher and I don’t know what to do? What tests should I take? Has anyone had this before and now they have a baby?

my world collapsed after having the happiest 3 weeks of my life to the worst days ever

I am so sorry. I know this heartbreak and wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I hope you have good support. The uncertainty is the worst. Look after yourself. IVF is still the lowest risk for ectopic pregnancy once you’ve had one, but it does make everything so scary. The ectopic pregnancy trust is great. I found their forum really helpful at the time xx

I’m so sorry, and my heart breaks for you.

I had an ectopic following my only embryo transfer, and like you I had happiest 3 weeks thinking this is it!

Be kind to yourself, take time out and look after yourself. IVF forces us to be incredibly strong, but it’s ok to not be!

Sending you hugs and love

Hi Ana,

Please take care of yourself, I know it's tough, I've been there... In 2018, after a day 2 transfer of my only embryo, I had a positive test but started spotting soon after and felt pain in my leg (not in my shoulder as most women do in this case). At week 6, my HCG was over 5K, and I had emergency surgery (laparotomy with salpingectomy) the same day. It was the worst time of my life, I thought I would die of sadness.

We decided to go on a long holiday after I recovered, and soon after that, we started another IVF journey with a private clinic in Norway. Transferred two embryos that didn't stick, and froze one who now is my 5yo DD.

So , there's hope ❤️

Sending you love, keep us posted 🥰

So sorry. I feel sad & cried reading this text 😭. I truly understand what u are feeling but don't lose hope. My friend had an ectopic pregnancy from a fresh transfer. After she did laparoscopy that cut the tubes. The next transfer resulted from twin boys. They got an accident when the twins were almost 2 years. One twin died on spot & the other was amputeted. That's life but at least she was able to concieve following an ectopic pregnancy. Wish u baby dust on the next transfer

Hi Ana90

I’m so sorry to hear this as it is almost identical to my experience last December. We were on our 4th cycle and like you had been extatic it had finally happened for us and like you say they were the happiest 5 weeks of this whole process. We went for our 6 week scan only to be told they couldn’t see anything in the sac and they did another blood test and scan which confirmed there was a mass to the right of the uterus so I too got a pregnancy of unknown location leaflet and was eventually diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, they think caused by a fibroid.

I am now exploring having the fibroid removed and have been reassured that the chances of another ectopic are only slim about 3% so depending how things go we may give it one last shot. It is such a big decision as we have to put our bodies through so much and I can imagine all the turmoil and grief you are feeling as I’m still working through that myself now.

All I can say is take some time to recover and when your ready get some counselling and research as much as you can about your best options and then trust whatever your gut instinct tells you to do next.

Sending a supportive hug and good luck in whatever you decide to do next x xx

It’s the most gutting thing after thinking the hard part is finally over, so sorry you’ve had your dreams dashed like this. I had a PUL which was suspected ectopic a few years ago and it never crossed my mind at the time that something like that existed. It took a couple of months for my body to realise and end the pregnancy naturally so I was lucky not to need surgery. I had success the next time I tried ivf, despite only getting one embryo. I don’t think it negatively impacts your future chances unless you have surgery that goes wrong and causes scarring but that’s very unusual. It’s so hard to have hope when in the pits of despair but it all just seems so random x
