I can’t believe I’m posting here, I usually only ever read others posts and comments but yet here I am! So I am 37 years old and my husband and I are beginning the journey of trying for another child (we already have an 8 year old daughter). I took ONE shot of depo birth control back in September 2024 (whyyyy did I do that) bc 2 mons later my husband and I decided to try for another baby. So, I had a period in December but still awaiting my next. I had an appt with my GYN and of course she told me that it is common to have delayed periods even with one shot of depo. However she ran some typical labs so that we would have a baseline. All of my labs seemed good except my AMH which was 0.52. She hasn’t even called me back to tell me yet, I was able to see my labs on the portal.
I guess my question is what now? I never imagined my ovarian reserve would come back so low. I’m not sure what else to do from here and really just want some insight and perhaps success stories from other women in my shoes. I’m not sure that IVF is even an option financially for us. I really really wanted to give my daughter a sibling, and praying I haven’t missed that window.

It can definitely knock you when you get an unexpected result, especially with no context or discussion with your doctor.
But as far as I’m aware, low amh doesn’t mean you can’t conceive or that you have poor egg quality. I *think* low amh might make you less likely to be a good candidate for ivf as I think you could be less likely to produce multiple eggs from the stimulation phase. (Which is what they’re going for with ivf).
But you don’t need multiple eggs to get pregnant, you just need one. It sounds like you’ve conceived without treatment with your 8yo (?) which surely would be a positive 🤞
Hope you can get some clarity on next steps after speaking with your doctor.
I really appreciate your positivity! It was just a punch to my spirit when I read that result. I never imagined it would be that low! Thank you so much for your kind words, I truly appreciate it 💜
I know the daunting feeling of receiving these types of results; I too have low AMH. Although the US measures differently I’m aware of both types of measurements BUT one thing I learnt from working with various fertility experts is that you shouldn’t measure your AMH shortly after taking birth control or hormones or even any infection or even just al a cold! Basically anything that can cause any amount of inflammation in the body can actually drastically affect the results.
I’m not saying these are not correct as they maybe, but all that means is it’s your picture that particular month. Sometimes it stays the same and continues to slowly decline and sometimes it changes quite dramatically; you only have to see others stories here in how their AMH went from low one month to normal a couple of months later. If I was you I would test again in a couple of months but only if you’re planning IVF. AMH has no value in predicting natural conception and there are no differences in the rates of natural pregnancies between women with low AMH and normal, only in IVF outcomes. Low AMH (when testing away from any hormones) and I would say at least twice, is just telling you, you may not collect that many eggs with stimulation. Again, it’s an indicator not 100% proof. I only say this from my experience and countless others I’ve spoken to and people who I’ve worked with.
Just please know that low AMH is not a predictor of natural fertility, only IVF outcomes. Of course, if you have concerns about anything regarding your natural fertility, then testing can be useful.
Testing only gives you snapshots, that’s why I personally don’t like one off blood tests, I like to have multiple or look at things like the DUTCH test which can monitor hormones over their entire month to give far more accurate pictures of what’s going on, but again this is only IF there are other concerns.
I really hope everything goes well for you and please don’t get too attached to this number as a one off reading. I’d repeat just incase the depo shot is still in your system a little, and only if you’re planning IVF. Best of luck xx
And that’s what interesting, that for natural cycles low amh may not affect me much. I actually thought about that number as I took the depo just a few months ago, and when my gyn calls, I’m going to discuss that with her as well. I think she drew all these labs to see if I would possibly be a candidate for clomid. I just think when I seen that low number, I immediately panicked. Thank you so much for your reassurance to this anxiety filled moma lol
I went for a fertility MOT as single at 37 and wanted reassurance. My AMH was 1.54 pmol /L and I was told to get a sperm donor and freeze embryos or freeze eggs. I ended up freezing eggs.
I just turned 41 last week and I now have a 3 month old baby - conceived naturally. I didn't have IVF and I didn't use the frozen eggs either. I'm still holding on to them as a last resort if issues conceiving second one.
AMH is a rubbish predictor of your ability to have children. My obstetrician said it angered her so much that I had been so stressed by it as it's just nonsense. All it takes is one egg. Also there is no point in having IVF as the issue is just the egg reserve (apparently) reducing. It doesn't mean you have issues getting pregnant and that's what IVF is for. You would literally be wasting your money. When I started TTC I ended up getting pregnant very very easily but had 3 early miscarriages in a row (fully investigated and told nothing wrong ) and by luck the 4th time pregnant it stuck and that's my son. Only thing I did was follow it starts with the egg book supplement guide.
Yeah, I’ve seen so many women spend so much on IVF and then conceive naturally, that would probably be me lol I’m going to continue taking vitamins to improve my egg quality and keep trying. It’s reassuring to know soooooo many women have been where I am, bc often times we feel alone in this journey. I’m thankful for this group!
A friend of mine was 36 years when her AMH was 0.34. Her Dr told her that low she will try IVF with that AMH at 36 because she was confident about the quality. So they proceed with IVF she got 4 eggs collected and all of them where PGT-A normal. So I think it depends with your clinic, the protocol and other factors.
I think the same thing honestly. I’d be interested to see what it is in a few months especially once my periods are regular again. I hate never took that one shot! Arghhhhhhhhh
Please read my story. I was 36 when I received my low AMh result (6.80 pmol/L) PLUS a really bad sperm analysis from my husband's side. I also had endomitritis (not endomitriosis) which means that my uterus wasn't sterile so it was unable to carry a baby. IVF was the only way for us. I had natural cycle IVF, and in 2022 I had my first daughter. 2 years later had another embryotransfer which led to my second daughter (now 3 months old). Low AMh doesn't mean anything. If your husband's sperm analysis is good and your uterus is also healthy you just keep on trying, don't loose hope and soon you will succeed. Please, please keep your hope! I am an example of how a low AMh is not always a problem.
