period after miscarriage

Firstly if you are reading this and have suffered a miscarriage, I am sorry and I hope my post doesn’t upset anyone.

I’m waiting to start my next round of IVF but my period is delayed. For those of you who have gone through this, how long did it take for your period to come back? I’m currently 6 weeks on Sunday and normally I’m always on time.

Thank you! X

Hi I am currently in the same position around 5 weeks and have no signs of it being on its way. I have pcos also so have always had irregular periods. I don’t have a follow up appointment for another 6 weeks but would love to get going again now.

I am so sorry for your loss, I hope you are doing ok, it is heartbreaking. I have had 3 miscarriages and each time it has been 4 weeks for me. I think we are all different and I really understand wanting to get going again. Can you ask your clinic for a reassurance scan? Or did you speak to an early pregnancy unit during your miscarriage, they might help you with a reassurance scan. I think everything will be fine, but I know how stressful it is so this is what i did, just got a scan to check everything was as it should be. Four weeks was long for me as often my cycles are much shorter.

Thank you for your reply and sorry for you loss. I hope you are doing okay. I had a reassurance scan few weeks after my d&c. We decided to book a holiday with all the stress and was hoping to do a round before we go away in Feb. I wanted to test the embroyo’s and put one back in when I return. The whole process, I just feel like time is ticking away with all the waiting. Just frustrating.

Thank you for replying and sorry for you loss. That’s a long time to wait for a follow up appointment. I usually just tell them what I want to do and they book me in. Unless you want to talk to your consultant? Hope the next round is the one for you!!!

Thank you, sorry you had to experience that too it’s truely horrendous. I had mine quite early and it happened naturally so when I was scanned the next day they couldn’t see anything. I think it’s just procedure at my clinic to have a follow up before can go again. The wait is the most annoying part and I do feel like time is ticking but then until I have a natural period I don’t think I can start again. Hope you get the positive you want next time x

Really sorry to hear of your loss.

I've had double figures miscarriages and, for me, it took roughly as many weeks as I was pregnant for my period to return.

I think this is because, whilst it is possible to ovulate 14 days after a miscarriage, most bodies do not (I was more like 3-4 weeks). It takes a while for HcG and progesterone to drop down and trigger the body to get ready to ovulate. This means your period is also delayed.

I found that my actual cycle was roughly the same length, once I'd factored in the delay in ovulation.

6-7 weeks is pretty standard for me, but it could be longer or shorter. I think this is why a lot of clinics want to wait 2 cycles before restarting treatment, as the first cycle is just so wonky. Gives body time to recover too.

I hope you don't need to but, for future, I found tracking my temperature useful (I do anyway for fertility) as it is the progesterone that causes it to rise, so once temp drops to your baseline, you can see that another cycle is about to start. You can use OPKs but it's a lot of stick peeing!

Hope that's helpful and that you're recovering, physically, mentally and emotionally.

Thank you and sorry for your loss too. I hope you are doing okay. That’s really helpful thanks for taking the time to reply. I’m 41 in July and I just don’t want to wait 2 months but I suppose it is what it is. I can’t control it. Tomorrow will be 6 weeks so hoping it comes then. Going by your predictions it’s next week!

Thanks, doing OK here.

I totally understand the pressure to 'get on with it' (I'm 40 in a few weeks, so thus has been during my senior 30s) but, weird as it may sound, you might do better -because your body can 'just' focus on growing eggs, rather than recovering from sustaining a pregnancy.

Worth chatting to your clinic about though, they do all have different protocols, this is just the one some I've been at have.

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. It really sucks. I’ve had two recent miscarriages And next period came about 5-6 weeks after.

Hope that helps. Sending positive vibes for future treatment.
