OHSS risks?

Hi all - we retrieved 29 eggs (22 mature) on Monday - I have to say this was beyond our wildest dreams and a drastic improvement on my 2nd and 1st failed cycles - and I am booked in for a transfer tomorrow at 12pm. My clinic seem to have just left the ball in my court regarding a fresh transfer. I'm feeling well apart from some bloat but that also be the progesterone. I'm worried about OHSS. Has anybody done a fresh after retrieving a high amount of eggs and been fine? Would it be safer to freeze and wait for a FET? Thanks xx

Hello and congratulations! Super keen ovaries! I had 19 eggs collected and was therefore at risk, did go on to develop late onset OHSS after transfer, mainly because I got pregnant (I'm 9 weeks today and my ovaries are still 3x as large as normal apparently on my scan this week!). The pregnancy hormones apparently make the difference. OHSS was not fun at all although I did manage to stay home and not at hospital. That said, severe OHSS is rare, and you're right, progesterone does cause bloat anyway.

Everybody is different and you can have lots of eggs collected and be fine, or have no risk factors and just get unlucky. I'd listen to what your clinic advises is best here. Whatever you decide, make sure you drink lots of fluids, avoid getting constipated, and good luck!

Aww thank you for your reply - big congratulations too! 🥰 how long would you say you experienced the OHSS? Are you still in pain now? Yeah as you say, I've spoke to different people/read lots of different stories and it seems luck of the draw sometimes. My clinic appear of the mindset that if I feel okay, they're happy to proceed! I think we will proceed tomorrow, I can't bare to wait any longer x

Thank you! To be honest, as this is my first pregnancy, it's very hard to know what is still residual OHSS discomfort and what is 'normal' first trimester symptoms. I reckon they probably make each other worse and kind of merge.

I had 2 weeks of being very uncomfortable with OHSS at the beginning - I looked about 6 months pregnant at the worst. Then it gradually improved, but with underlying low/medium level discomfort until recently. I didn't take time off work, but my current job is entirely work from home, which is lucky because I could not have physically managed a commute or being in the office.

If I had the choice to go back and do things again, I would still go ahead with my fresh transfer. I didn't want to wait! And it worked, so we got lucky in the overall scheme of things. :)

Hi.. it can work ok. If you do decide to go ahead, then name sure you drink loads of water in case your ovaries fail to quieten down straight away. Good luck Diane
