Hi all - we retrieved 29 eggs (22 mature) on Monday - I have to say this was beyond our wildest dreams and a drastic improvement on my 2nd and 1st failed cycles - and I am booked in for a transfer tomorrow at 12pm. My clinic seem to have just left the ball in my court regarding a fresh transfer. I'm feeling well apart from some bloat but that also be the progesterone. I'm worried about OHSS. Has anybody done a fresh after retrieving a high amount of eggs and been fine? Would it be safer to freeze and wait for a FET? Thanks xx
OHSS risks?: Hi all - we retrieved 2... - Fertility Network UK
OHSS risks?
Hello and congratulations! Super keen ovaries! I had 19 eggs collected and was therefore at risk, did go on to develop late onset OHSS after transfer, mainly because I got pregnant (I'm 9 weeks today and my ovaries are still 3x as large as normal apparently on my scan this week!). The pregnancy hormones apparently make the difference. OHSS was not fun at all although I did manage to stay home and not at hospital. That said, severe OHSS is rare, and you're right, progesterone does cause bloat anyway.
Everybody is different and you can have lots of eggs collected and be fine, or have no risk factors and just get unlucky. I'd listen to what your clinic advises is best here. Whatever you decide, make sure you drink lots of fluids, avoid getting constipated, and good luck!
Aww thank you for your reply - big congratulations too! 🥰 how long would you say you experienced the OHSS? Are you still in pain now? Yeah as you say, I've spoke to different people/read lots of different stories and it seems luck of the draw sometimes. My clinic appear of the mindset that if I feel okay, they're happy to proceed! I think we will proceed tomorrow, I can't bare to wait any longer x
Thank you! To be honest, as this is my first pregnancy, it's very hard to know what is still residual OHSS discomfort and what is 'normal' first trimester symptoms. I reckon they probably make each other worse and kind of merge.
I had 2 weeks of being very uncomfortable with OHSS at the beginning - I looked about 6 months pregnant at the worst. Then it gradually improved, but with underlying low/medium level discomfort until recently. I didn't take time off work, but my current job is entirely work from home, which is lucky because I could not have physically managed a commute or being in the office.
If I had the choice to go back and do things again, I would still go ahead with my fresh transfer. I didn't want to wait! And it worked, so we got lucky in the overall scheme of things.
Hi.. it can work ok. If you do decide to go ahead, then name sure you drink loads of water in case your ovaries fail to quieten down straight away. Good luck Diane
Hi, with both of my EC I was at risk of OHSS, 1st one they collected 21 and 2nd 27, but it is all how your body respond- my clinic before trigger was checking my (I think) estriadol levels, if they were close to 4000 or 7000? I had to use trigger for frozen transfer, but if they would be below these level I could use HCG trigger. All as precautions to avoid OHSS.
Do you know which trigger did you use? Or if your clinic checked your hormon level before trigger? Maybe they did and you were not at risk
Hi, it was a few years ago when I had 22 eggs retrieved and the clinic said I was at risk of OHSS so they did a scan to check. Is this not something your clinic will offer? When they did the scan they saw I had fluid linked to OHSS and recommended freezing and waiting for 2 weeks. Rescanned to check before they booked in a transfer.
hi there, my first round I had 27 eggs. I did feel very bloated and it was uncomfortable, but apart from that not much else and I was basically back to normal after a couple of weeks. They had to do my bloods though to check hormone levels before deciding whether which trigger to give and whether to go ahead or wait, and they recommended that I waited and did a frozen transfer a few weeks later. I then had to have buserulin trigger instead of Ovitrelle. They said that the rise in my hormones, combined with a potential pregnancy and hormones associated with that could make me feel quite unwell and it was safer for me to wait until my body had recovered. I guess every clinic is different and if they aren’t concerned then that is great. Good luck with whatever you choose sending you positive vibes xx
Hello! That is really great news about your number of eggs. My clinic also said it was up to me even when I told then I was struggling after EC. I was very grateful the consultant scanned me before going ahead with transfer (we were all prepared to do a fresh transfer) because he saw my ovaries were enlarged and he decided transferring wasn't worth the risk. So if you're unsure, ask if they will scan you first. Xxx
Ahh thank you I will ask today then. As much as I will be so disappointed if I can’t do a fresh, I suppose it’s not worth the risk is it xx
Hope all went well for you today. Let us know how you got on. Try not to be disappointed if you have to go for FET xx
Hello. I also had about 29 eggs retrieved, 16 mature, 12 embryos. I did a frozen transfer. I didn’t have any issues going forward. Freezing may be an option for you since it may yield a lot of embryos. Good luck
