Private ivf medicine costs

Hi All, I have undergone ivf with a private clinic. I paid upfront for the full package. Today my clinic said that I will now need to pay for all my meds as I got a bfp. My question is won't this work out really expensive? I am on lubion injections, progynova tabs, clexane injections, cyclogest pessaries. Does anybody know if you can get these meds via nhs prescription? Or do I need to carry on buying privately? Thank you x

I got pregnant after privately funded IVF in Greece & didn't bring enough medication back with me to see me through to 12 weeks. I needed the progesterone gel which my GP did prescribe on a NHS prescription... I think I needed 3 weeks worth. I'm not sure if he done it as he was aware of my previous miscarriages but he did say most Doctors would have given me a private prescription. I also needed some Innohep injections ( not many, about 8 ) & after photocopying my clinic paperwork ,another GP prescribed them for me. I am currently back in Greece on holiday so I am getting all the Innohep injections I need. I still pay for them but it's cheaper than a private prescription back home as I'm sure my GP wouldn't continue to prescribe it on a NHS prescription. From what I have read, I might have been lucky with my Doctors surgery but it's worth asking your GP. Wishing you a happy & healthy pregnancy. Xx

Thanks gracieboos. Thats what I need to work out, where and what route works out cheaper and also how long it takes me via gp as I doubt they just write you a prescription for what you like. Im guessing they would need a letter from the private fertility dr to explain everything. I be5 its hit and miss with gps in what they do and dont prescribe on the nhs. Congrats on your pregnancy! It's definitely an added expense that I didn't really think about prior to my BFP for some reason! It's shocking how much these medications cost too. Good luck with everything 😘 xx

Hi I’ve got to pay for my prescription and my utrogestan pessaries were £95 and they don’t even last me 3 weeks. I know medication vary in price, am also on progynova (but not sure of the price as haven’t brought it on it’s own ) if you do need some cyclogest pessaries I’ve got two or maybe 3 boxes am not using ( had them from my first round but they changed all my meds in the second round) xx

hey. I’m an NHS GP. If it is a treatment that we are familiar with and feel happy to take the risk on, then we can prescribe. If it is something that is normally prescribed by hospitals or it is initiated outside of the NHS, then it gets difficult. There are certain drugs that we are not allowed to prescribe. For example, in the past, Clexane was on a red list in parts of London and was only meant to be prescribed by hospitals. You can have a chat with your GP but they may say that they can’t prescribe the drugs- you will definitely need a letter from your consultant explaining why each drug is needed and what monitoring they would expect and what to do if the monitoring tests are outside normal.

A private GP may prescribe them for you on a private script but then you will be paying the cost of the drugs plus any pharmacy administration cost. Sorry to say it may become expensive. You may be able to compromise and get your NHS GP to prescribe the pessaries as they are used quite a lot and maybe even the progynova.

Hi Zoe, thank you for your reply. Really useful. I am going to wait for my 2nd hcg test today to confirm the pregnancy and then speak to both private dr and my gp regarding the meds. I dont want to bulk order lots as I have my first scan in 2 weeks (depending on todays result) and then I will order enough for these next 2 weeks. Anything to keep the costs down will help. Even if its just pessaries and progynova. But I can see what is suggested. Thank you for your well wishes xx

Hey so I have just had a FET. Before I was confirmed pregnant the gp didn’t prescribe anything I needed as I was under the clinic and I had to pay. I also paid for the first two weeks of meds eg progesterone injections etc that I needed after transfer. It wasn’t cheap I’m afraid but the pharmacist can order the cheapest brand for you if you speak to them. However, since I got my BFP I have needed to continue with progesterone and estrogen for 12 weeks and my doc prescribed them on the NHS, as Zoe said, if it’s something they recognise and would maybe be prescribed in pregnancy anyway then I think they can. My gp has been fab and done everything they can to support so hopefully you will have the same experience. Def have a chat with them. Congrats on your BFP x

If you do have to buy some privately do shop around as the prices can vary massively. From memory I got the clexane and cyclogest from Asda.xx
