Travelling with IVF meds

Hi ladies, my DF & I are going on a weeks holiday on Saturday but I just realised that I can't fit or take my sharps box with us but need to take about 9 injections while we're there!

What do you ladies suggest - shall I ask at the hotel reception if they have a sharps box?!

Have you got time to contact your clinic? Mine gave me a smaller ‘travel’ sharps box to take with me.

Hi ya, I do but I'm an hour & a half away from the clinic so wouldn't have time to pick it up, or the train fare :-(

I might see if my local GP has one I could borrow maybe

Ah ok. Yep maybe try your GP or pharmacy. The one I had was pretty slimline, a fraction of the size of a normal one.

Hi Joanna - your pharmacy will have sharp boxes. It might be worth exploring how you dispose of it before your return flight. I had an issue with finding somewhere to dispose of mine when we were in Bulgaria back in May.

They sell travel sized sharps bins on amazon for about a fiver, which could be a good option?

Ooh yes, I think I'll pop into my gp & chemist tomorrow & if I can't get one there I'll order one on Amazon on a next day! Thank you :-)

I went to turkey without a sharps box intending to bring the needles homes but they had a bin in the bathroom with a picture of a needle (amongst other pictures of hazardous waste) so maybe see what waste your accomodation takes if you cant get a travel sharps bin

I put the lids back on the needles and brought them back in the same box they came in. But you could ask the hotel if they can help. They must have people stay a lot who have to do injections?

Hi we were away while I was down regging so had a week of injections to do. I took a small Tupperware box that fit the needles in, it was a clip locking system one (if that makes sense) I brought back the used needles in my suitcase and had no problems, we were in Greece. I put them into my sharps box once home xx

I haven’t done this yet but might have to do it in the near future. Can you just put your meds in your luggage in the hold? Do you need a letter from your clinic? Just wondered what the procedure was about traveling with such meds?

in reply tolondonrc

I never put any important medication in the hold because if your luggage goes missing you are out of meds and you can’t claim from the airline.

I took mine in hand luggage and got a letter from the clinic- just told airport security but no issues. Some countries are stricter so worth checking but EU pretty straightforward x

I have a diabetic kid in class and we use an old plastic bottle while we’re out and about, you should be able to take it to any chemist or docs surgery while your away and they will dispose of them for you!

Take a takeaway tub, it should fit the right number of needle in, and then tape it up securely and throw it away when you’re there? Or if you have hold luggage take it home and put the needles in your sharps rub then.

Thank you lovely ladies for all your suggestions! I've decided I'll go with taking a Tupperware box then when I get back home putting them in my sharps bin :-)
