Pregnancy Test Day

Cloudappreciation profile image

Hi all, I’m looking for advice on whether to go to work on the day of the pregnancy test. This is my first cycle and we have no frozen embryos so I feel like this is our one chance. (Unless we fund our own cycles but I’m not sure if we will.) I’m about to start a long term supply teaching job at a school and should be starting on the Monday and the test is on the Tuesday. I’m worried I’ll be too upset if it’s negative. I should have started the job after Easter and have already delayed it 2 weeks due to treatment so I’m trying to work out what to do for the best. Should I test early on the Sunday or just delay my start date again perhaps?

this is my first transfer and also don’t have any frozen! So understand the worries- I’ll not be in work just to give me time to process

I decided to take the day off work on testing day as well as the following day. I wouldn’t have been able to focus at work so it felt like the right thing for me. Wishing you all the best x

My counselor had advised to have time off planned for transfer day , it wasn't always possible for me but yeah I think if you can take the day off it will be better.

I didn't take time off for any of my tests but then I tested early and in a way it took the pressure off - I found the idea of pinning all my hopes on one day and loading it with pressure would have been too much and probably couldn't have concentrated on work either way after that build up. It's up to you but generally you should have an accurate result before the clinic's OTD, especially if just a couple of days before, but some women do have late implanters. If it's positive though that's it as you can't really have false positives, it's only if it's negative that you may start to obsess a bit. Also, if you test on the Tuesday and it's negative will you feel up to working on the Wednesday? If you're starting a new job it may be a lot at once - I've been there and found work a distraction but everyone's different.

This. I've always had a different day in mind for testing. Something that suits me and takes the pressure off the official test date. TWW is hard enough.

I am doing 2nd cycle IVF and have booked off the test days from work as I wouldn't be able to concentrate on work when feeling upset (or to some extent even if it was good news and I was feeling happy/disbelieving). My OTD is 14 days past transfer but I tested at 11 days past as this gives a very good indication if using a reliable early detection test such as First Response and then I just double check on 14dpt to be sure. As it's a brand new job I'd think about delaying the start date, perhaps saying a medical procedure you need has come up and you'll need a day for that and a couple of days to recover so possibly just say you need to start the following week. It's not a good feeling to let people down but you are giving them plenty of notice and better this than to be forced to take time off sick straight away or push through it and not be able to give your all to your new job. Up until recently I had a busy person facing role so can imagine teaching is not easy to do when you don't feel 100%.

I would test on the Sunday. How many days past transfer is the Tuesday test date? 2 days before should give you a fairly accurate result so you can prepare yourself as best you can for Tuesday is what I normally do, although I now test each day form about 5 days past but in the early days of my IUIs and first transfers I just moved the test date to a weekend or day I was working from home xx

I'm a teacher. I've avoided testing on the morning of a work day but never took time off. I've tested on a Sunday ahead of a Tuesday official test day, and also on an evening, either the day of test day or the one before. With a '5 days early' pregnancy test you'd get an accurate response either way. I then find teaching is all consuming enough to distract you all day either way. Good luck!

I think you should definitely prepare to have the day off if it’s negative. If you feel like you wouldn’t be able to call in sick then I would delay your start date again like you said. Otherwise call in sick.

Hopefully it will be positive though! Keeping everything crossed for you!

I take the test day off. Even though I tested the day before with my last cycle and will again this cycle, I find it difficult to get myself in work mode and need time to process the result. Also, even though I had a negative result from the urine test I still found the phone call confirming the result really upsetting. All the best with your result and praying you get your BFP. Xx

I tested 2 days early to avoid testing on a work day. Just gave me a bit of time to come to terms with the result before facing work x
