Can IVF meds affect AMH / FSH levels

Wondering if anyone can help. I had my first failed round of IVF last month and am planning to move straight on to a second round later this month.

I decided to do a Hertility postal blood test to check where my hormone levels were. I was really shocked as my AMH had more than halved since August and my FSH has tripled. This feels like a crazy jump. My levels were already pretty bad when I had them checked in August but I’m really shocked at the speed of decline.

In August my AMH was 4.8 and it’s now 1.7, and FSH has gone from 11 to 33.

I am 40 so know that I would have low AMH and high FSH but the speed of decline has really worried me.

Question is is there a chance the IVF meds could have messed up my levels? I only stopped taking progesterone pesseries 4 days before I did the blood test. Could that have had an impact?

I am not sure about FSH but your AMH isn’t affected by any hormones is my understanding. It’s however dependant on the sensitivity of the test and I have found the postal ones to be not the best for that. My clinic AMH test results went UP slightly when I hit 40 (vs 38) which they said didn’t mean my AMH had improved any (as it is what it is and you have the eggs you are born with) but that their test had gotten better in that time period so my AMH had likely stayed about the same. Not sure of that helps any but I would be a bit wary of those postal results especially given how recently you had them checked at your clinic xx

Thanks for your reply. It does feel a bit odd how extreme the changes are, and the levels they’ve reported would mean I’m basically menopausal, which I really don’t think I am. I ovulate regularly each month, and have no menopause symptoms. Plus I’m only 40, so it would be about 10 years earlier than average!!

Also I did IVF just last month where I had 5 follicles growing and got 3 eggs, which I know is low but I don’t think that would have happened if I was menopausal. I kind of wish I didn’t get those postal tests done as I now don’t really know what to do with the results other than stress about it!

Yeah you are kind of left without a plan or next steps with the postal tests aren’t you! Will your clinic test your FSH again? I know that is dependant on cycle day so could well have been affected if you were on hormones etc. xx

I will ask my clinic about it when I next have a face-to-face with the consultant. I’m due to start my injections for down reg in 9 days so not sure it’s going to make any difference at this point to the treatment plan.
