Possible miscarriage and advice on next steps?

Hi guys,

I need some advice as I am driving myself mad with my indecisiveness! I should be 6 weeks pregnant today (via IVF FET 22nd Feb). However I started with very light bleeding on Friday and panicked as that was that was the exact point I miscarried last year. I called my fertility clinic and they kind of fobbed me off told me just to monitor. I’m meant to have my 7 week scan next Tuesday so they basically telling me to wait until then unless I bleed heavy. The bleeding has continued over the weekend and was very light unless last night where it was bright red and I had very small clots in it. It stopped and has gone back to being light. I have had tummy cramps and backache too. I still have morning sickness (all day) and tender boobs. I’m taking progesterone 3 times a day along with estrogen tablets and a blood thinning injection at night. I’m 90% sure I’m having a miscarriage so I’ve just tried to get on with it. So basically my question is should I just wait until next week to get confirmation either way or should I go to my doctors and see if they will refer me to EPU? My bleeding compared to my miscarriage last year is very different but I just think it could be meds stopping it from being heavy? Any advice would be greatly received x x x

hi, I’m sorry you are going through this. I had spotting at 4 weeks and my clinic wouldn’t help with an HCG or anything so I went to my GP and explained my worries. She referred me to the EPU where they did a 48 hour apart HCG and then a scan at 5 weeks. The HCG tests helped some of my anxiety. I felt very grateful to the GP as my clinic were not interested in helping me at all, despite all the money I have paid them 🙄.

Same as previous response, only way to tell is HCGs ideally two days apart. It's happened to me 3 times and I am amazed at how useless the fertility clinics (NHS and private) are and just abandon you at the one time you really need them. My GP arranged the tests but you can also get them done privately in person or using an online lab but latter might be a bit delayed as takes a day or so to deliver, then send off. You may also be able to get a scan done privately or at the EPU - I had both around 6 weeks when I had a PUL so it can be done. The only thing with all this is that it probably doesn't change the outcome, it just gives you an idea of what's going on.

I’m so sorry, this sounds like an awful situation.

I’ve recently had some early pregnancy scares and directly rang my nearest EPU. They were brilliant and got me in for a scan at the next available date. Perhaps try giving them a call as there’s a good chance they will see you soon?

Thank you so much for your advice. I decided to call my clinic yesterday and they got me an appointment with EPU this morning. It was a haemotoma. The little baby is still there. Such a huge relief x x x

Hi Endoplnk14, I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. Your GP or IVF clinic can refer you into the EPU and they should be able to scan you at 6 weeks and see what’s going on. Best of luck to you.

Hi Endopink, that is wonderful news! I’m in a similar situation as you - I have a small haematoma below the pregnancy sac. It might be worth speaking to your IVF clinic, about whether to continue the blood thinners. I’m being treated by a private reproductive immunology clinic and they decided to stop my aspirin and Fragmin (Clexane) after two bleeds a few weeks ago, as blood thinners can worsen the bleeding I think. It’s a balancing act though apparently and so a case by case decision. Best of luck to you.

hi, I’m so sorry this is happening to you and you aren’t getting any support! I would phone your clinic back and explain you have been bleeding all weekend and also check if you should defo be continuing blood thinners whilst bleeding (I was asked to stop these) my clinic don’t do HCG blood tests or early scans as standard but they did when I was bleeding a few times. Including my successful round where I bled the most (with a sch) if they don’t help defo ask then for a referral to your EPU or just self present! Thinking of you 💜

This is very worrying. I had a bleed on my first pregnancy at 6 weeks. It was a haemotoma which they say is very common in IVF pregnancies. It does correct itself over a few days once it runs its course. If you are in London I use a walk in clinic that does a HCG test and results within 6 hours. I use them for monitoring when I am having one of those days and need to reassure myself. It’s £49 (cheaper than my clinic which is £70) Look after yourself, the unknown is scary. Do whatever you need to console yourself. This is paramount. Let us know how you go love
