Pain residing after egg collection

Hi all, I had my first ever egg collection on Monday, they got 9 eggs, 7 of which have fertilised via ICSI. Got our fingers crossed that we should have some 5 day blastocysts for transfer this Saturday 🤞I wanted to check others experiences of recovery post egg collection. I vomited and had a lot of stomach pain straight after the collection, the nurses think I had a bad reaction to the sedation. I went home after a couple of hrs in the recovery room, and they gave me some anti sickness drugs. Spent the day in bed at home recovering. The sickness thankfully subsided later that same day, but the stomach pain is still quite intense 2 days later. I can only walk quite slowly as it’s so tender, and my tummy is very bloated and sore. Did other people have it this bad for the days following egg collection? I’m not sure if it’s mild OHSS (my AMH levels have always been a tad on the high side, was was monitored closely during stim, but follicles seemed to be an average number). I’m sleeping and eating well, just the stomach pain that’s quite intense still. Just want to make sure a fresh embryo transfer this Saturday isn’t at risk!

Nihilism MiniCeeCee. Oh dear, it seems as if your ovaries are still a bit active. Make sure you drink at least 3 litres of water daily. Keep an eye on your urine output, that there’s plenty and it is pail in colour. If the output goes down or you get breathless, them you need to be seen. You can safely take paracetamol for pain, but no anti inflammatories such as ibuprofen. Have a rest, but walk around as well and be careful not to get constipated. As that can be painful when passing by sore ovaries. Get well soon and I hope this cycle is successful. Diane

Thanks Diane, yes drinking plenty of water and no constipation, urine looks fine. Been back to work so gentle waking etc. it’s just this pain that is residing. I’ll see how I get on tomorrow and Friday, and hopefully it gets better with time. Maybe just a bit bruised in there?!

Hi. It could be. Hope you’re feeling better today. Diane

Diane, can I jump on this post because I'm in pain!! Urine output is fine but I've not managed to go to the toilet since egg collection Monday. It's now Thursday morning. I've started taking things for constipation but any pushing down really hurts!! I wake up in the night with pain near by ovaries. I constantly feel like it's constant trapped wind pain in my stomach and pressure build up but I'm passing wind regularly (alot more than I usually do). I am taking the progesterone pessaries but had to swap to vaginal input as they irritated my piles and that's caused bleeding. Feeling very fed up!!!

Hi. Only just read this. Sounds like you have an active cyst on your ovary, or it’s just tender with poo trying to pass by. Keep up with the water in case it is ovary related and see your GP asap. Hope you’re soon sorted. Diane x

Right here with you - had my egg collection on Monday, had overall not felt too bad, just a bit bloated, but it's getting steadily worse. Right now I am in a lot of pain and VERY bloated. my whole trunk is aching and sore. I believe it's actually due to the Progesterone - I'm taking Cyclogest. Are you taking progesterone?

Exactly the same! It’s so so tender. I’m also on Cycologest, been taking since Monday night. Wonder if that’s what’s making the pain not go away? Are you hoping for a fresh transfer this week?

Yeah, i think the progesterone is certainly causing the bloating / constipation (that and just recovering from the sedation).

Yes I am hoping for a fresh transfer this week... I've got two fertilised embryos, will find out on Saturday if any made it to day 5 blast. Was quite disappointed to only retrieve three eggs, but the more i've read, it makes sense for the amount of eggs that were over 17mm, which was three. I just think maybe they could have managed my expectations slightly better - to go from 21 follicles to 3 retrieved eggs felt devastating! But luckily 2 fertilised. Hopefully at least one makes it to blast. What about you? x

Yeh the managing of expectations is so important, as otherwise hopes can just bounce up and down even more than might be necessary. I’m really rooting for you, and hope you get 1 or 2 to day 5 🙏 I had 9 eggs retrieved on Monday , 8 were suitable for ICSI (as we have male factor infertility), and 7 of the 8 fertilised overnight. Hoping for a day 3 update tomorrow, and 🤞 we get to day 5 with 1 or more. It’s such a high stress waiting game. I’m trying to ensure I have a plan for worst case scenario - ie. What do I do, to look after myself, if it’s not happening this time round and don’t get any day 5’s, a transfer doesn’t work etc. The hope is still obviously there, but just making sure I also plan for looking after myself if it doesn’t work this time. Holding out hope for us both though this week! X

I've done 3 egg collections and always take a while to recover - I know now that it takes me about a week to feel better and another week to feel normal! Go easy on yourself, good luck!

Hi, I've had a few boughts of OHSS, but my egg numbers were higher. The other thing I had once, which is rate as hens teeth is an internal bleed after egg collection. The pain is really bad in the stomach, worse than OHSS. I was monitored in clinic for a day and put on blood thinners. Either way, drink lots of water and if it doesn't start reducing go to your clinic. OHSS can get worse before it gets better, but an internal bleed should get better. That's just my experience.

I hope you feel better soon. The things we go through.

Good luck

X

thanks so much, appreciate you sharing! Do you mind me asking whether there was bleeding when you went to the toilet when you had an internal bleed? My pain doesn’t seem to be getting better or worse, so I might mention it to the clinic today. Thanks again!
