I think it’s all over 😢

After having a miracle BFP from a natural conception following our first failed round of ICSI I think I’m having a miscarriage and feel so heartbroken.

I couldn’t believe it when I tested positive after my period didn’t come - it just seemed too good to be true… and now I think I’m losing it at 5 and a half weeks.

Last Saturday I had light dark brown spotting, which I know can be a positive sign of implantation bleeding. But then last night while out for dinner with work colleagues I had fresh red blood when I went to the bathroom (like a normal period). Thankfully it was towards the end of the meal because as it’s still so early I’d not told anyone so didn’t want to then explain what was happening so I quickly made my excuses and left. I was terrified of it getting worse but then when I woke this morning there was only some dark brown spotting and no more red blood.

So then I started feeling like it may not be over afterall. I also had some nausea this morning for the first time in the pregnancy… But today I had to travel 2hrs to London for an awards do with a client and during the awards when I went to the bathroom I passed thick red stringy blood (at least 15cm) which again knocked me for six and made me feel pretty certain it must be a miscarriage.

It was awful to be out at an awards ceremony when feeling like utter crap and having to put a brave face on and not let in how I was feeling or what was happening.

As this is my first pregnancy I have so many questions:

- is there any chance this isn’t a miscarriage with that much blood?

- if it is a miscarriage (given I’m not yet 6 weeks) I presume I just have to wait it out… I had a 7 week viability scan booked on 20th June, should I keep it to confirm it’s definitely a miscarriage? Or should I just call the doctor on Monday and ask to have blood tests to check my hcg levels?

- how soon will it take before I have a ‘normal period’ so I can then start my second cycle of ICSI we’ve prepaid for?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Lis

bleeding isn’t always a bad sign so please don’t panic yet. I’ve big red bleeds in my last pregnancy she is now 4 and this pregnancy and I’m now 23 weeks nearly. Both were haematomas. Is there any way you can get a couple of blood tests to check your hcg? Xx

I had a very similar bleed at 7-8weeks, a week after I’d had a scan to confirm viable pregnancy, it was a quite big bleed more than a period, it was fresh blood and lot of it but no clots it went on and off like that for a week or so blood to brown and then happened again with less of an intial bleed. It stopped completely by about 12 weeks. She is now 6 days old. There is still hope. Definitely keep your scan date can you move it forward and / or check your HCG I was told with adenomyosis sometimes this can happen as in the first 12 weeks you have all the hormones peaking and can cause the adenomyosis to bleed like on a period but after 12 weeks hormones settle down and the placenta takes over Xx

I had a very heavy bleed at 7 weeks - lasted around 24 hours and hospitalised me. Baby is now 18 months old, it was a haematoma caused when we had the embryo transferred, try not to worry as like others have said bleeding isn’t always a bad sign! X

I had this exact same thing 2 days ago. I am 6 weeks today I went to the BEP (bleeding in early pregnancy) clinic in my local hospital and was in complete shock when they scanned and saw a yolk in a sac. They showed me the bleed site which was next to it and said it was a heamatoma and more common than we think. Pleae don’t panic and see if you can get a scan. Sending all my love 🙏🏼

I had a bleed at 5 weeks and 8 weeks and she is now here and 9 months old. Keeping everything crossed for you xx

I am really sorry you are going through this. I had a large painful bleed at 6w and I know how awful it is. If you haven't already, call your local Early Pregnancy Unit, so they can scan you and check how things are. If they won't see you, it might be worth considering doing a private scan. For me, the cause was a large subchorionic hematoma - I was told to work from home, take it easy, continue taking my IVF meds and stop the baby aspirin immediately. Fortunately, the hematoma was gone by the 12 week scan. Very best of luck!

Hi Lis,I'm so sorry to hear that...but who knows???

Never wait until next scan or next day, go straight to hospital or call your doctor.

Fingers crossed and hopefully everything is fine. Wishing you all the luck in the world xx

so sorry for your anxiety and pain your feeling. Just want to let you know with 9 miscarriages I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen no blood and loss at 4 months and I’ve had a beautiful baby boy even though I severely bled for weeks chunks and chunks coming out blood running down my legs!! Go and get a scan on Monday not a blood work and rest and wait it out. My point is you just never know. Could be a miscarriage could not. Prayers your way

I'm sorry you're going through this. I would definitely keep the scan booked in, but phone the clinic as soon as you can to tell them what's going on. Ask for hcg blood tests. They should do one to check levels and then another to check hcg levels are going up. I doubt they'll do a scan at this early stage as they won't see anything (I had the same thing last month and that's what they told me) x

I’m so sorry you are going through this. If any bleeding you can contact your EPU and get a scan (or at least a HCG blood test) that day, they should give you one. You don’t need to wait until the viability scan. Sending you love xx

thanks so much for all your advice, I’ve just called the local midwife team who’ve given me a referral to the EPU so I can call them back in an hour and book an appointment for asap but they’re fully booked today/tomorrow so will still be a short wait Xx

Contact your local EPU. They’ll be able to scan. I had a natural BFP once post failed ivf. I miscarried, it was huge clots. No mistaking it. So 🤞🏼 for you x

Just think positive, if you have a doubt, do a scan at week 6. I had spotting and two huge blood clots at week 6+3, went for a scan and was shocked when the sonographer said- mummy I can see 2 beautiful heartbeats. Someone in this forum told me to be positive as I had no cramps. I had 2 embryos transferred due to my medical history but didn’t expect both to implant. I am blessed with 2 because daughters and tomorrow they will be 2 months. Good luck 🤞. Lots of love ❤️

sorry to hear this. I had a miracle natural. I had similar bleeding. It didn’t end up well unfortunately. Get some hcg bloods done asap to see if they are doubling. You won’t be able to see much on scan at this stage, but least you would know if it was in the right place. Fingers crossed for you x

Stay positive and have checks done as soon as you can xx

Hey there, I have had both outcomes in this scenario so completely understand your worries.x I’m incredibly hopeful that it’s the good outcome for you. The EPU teams are really amazing but the waiting is so hard.x Keeping everything crossed for you.x

I think you need to be seen by a doctor right away so you can know what is happening. It could be a miscarriage and it could be something else, but you probably need to know. You should tell your doctor right away what is happening and see what they say.

hi there. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing such difficult and changing symptoms. Nausea is a good sign and not all signs of red blood is miscarriage. It could be a haematoma. But it is a bit impossible to know without a scan/blood test. At 5 weeks they should be able to see an egg sac but if an early miscarriage I don’t know if that would still be there. But it’s worth going to the epu in any case and they can advise you. Really hope in your case it is not an mc - everything crossed for you and at least it sounds like you have no period pain which is often accompanying a miscarriage. All the best xx

Hi HoneyB11,

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, it’s an incredibly stressful time. Hope you can get an appt with the EPU soon for a scan and bloods.

When I had my spontaneous miscarriage it was accompanied by intense waves of lower back pain and abdominal cramps. There are other reasons for bleeding which may not be miscarriage and it might not be over for you.

Keeping everything crossed for you. X

I’ve managed to get a scan at 2pm Monday with the EPU so will know for sure either way but thank you to all your comments and positive vibes! Think I need to expect the worse and hope for the best. I can at least take the positive that for the first time ever we managed to conceive naturally so all is not lost and we can keep trying.

Baby dust to everyone trying xx

Quick update for anyone following my post… after continuing to bleed all weekend I went for the scan at the EPU this afternoon and she couldn’t see anything, not even a sac, though she did say it might be too early to see but I got the impression it was more likely to be an ectopic pregnancy as she also said ‘the best I can hope for is that I’ve had an early pregnancy loss’. They also did my bloods which came back 345 hcg which although is low it’s within the range which means I have to go back for a second test on weds (and hope it’s dropped by 60%) as if it’s only 15-20% then more likely an ectopic.

I’m feeling sad but just want this to be over now - the bleeding, the pain…

And get some closure so we can move on and start focusing on our next round of ivf.

Love and hugs to all, especially those who’ve been so supportive Xx
