I underwent egg collection last Wednesday and they collected 8 eggs. The following day the embryologist called to say of those 8, 7 were mature and 5 successfully fertilised. They explained that they wouldn’t be back in touch unless something significant changed to the 5 day transfer plan.
I go back tomorrow for my transfer and since I haven’t heard over the weekend I’m hoping it’s good news but I’m interested to know if anyone has had all their fertilised eggs make it to day 5 blastocysts? I’m not really sure what to expect and I’m hoping we get all to blastocyst but is this realistic and what are the odds? The plan is to freeze any in case the FET doesn’t work.
Thanks! Xx

It really depends. I did four IVF cycles. On my second one, I think only two eggs fertilized but both made it to blastocyst. I honestly can't remember now. For my last cycle only one fertilized and that made it to blastocyst. It really depends on the person and also on the cycle.
I had 9 eggs, 7 mature and 6 blastocysts, but was told that was quite unusual. Everyone will be different, but there is usually quite a drop between fertilised eggs and blastocysts.
Fingers crossed it is great news for you tomorrow and good luck for your transfer x
thanks for sharing and great to hear they all made it to blasto and you have 2 healthy boys! Very encouraging
completely depends! Which doesn’t give you the answer but I remember someone telling me on average 50% survive to blast stage! I had 17 eggs 13 fertilized and 7 day 5 embryos all frozen (first FET was miscarriage and on second transfer now)! All the best for tomorrow I’ll be watching for an update! sending some baby dust your way! X
hey. All of the above are great. Mine was slightly less good. Collected 22, 15 mature, 10 fertilised via ICSI and 3 blasts in the end. I think it can really vary person to person. I think they say that from the fertilised eggs, expect 30-50% to get to blastocyst. You only need 1 to work though. Our first transfer gave us our gorgeous boy…2 more chances in the freezer!
Mine was less good, unfortunately. My egg collection was last Monday (1st cycle). I had 16 eggs collected, 14 mature, and 13 fertilised. Unfortunately, I found out this weekend that only one made it to a full blastocyst. I’m currently waiting for PGT-A results, but not feeling very hopeful ☹️. I’m 44 though, so it is all very dependent on age. Grassfields - wishing you masses of luck for tomorrow xxx
so sorry to hear on the attrition you experienced, must have been really unexpected to only get 1 from 13 fertilised, fingers crossed the PGT-A results are OK. Thanks for the well wishes, just hoping it’s a good result but nothing we can do if it’s not. Such a roller coaster!! X
Bless you, thanks. I am feeling VERY sorry for myself! It was a huge shock after getting such positive initial results, but I guess these things can happen at my age. I’m sure you’ll be fine - I’ve got everything crossed for you, and hopefully you’ll have a great number of blasts and a smooth and successful transfer 🙏❤️❤️
That’s an amazing number of eggs collected. I only ever got half that number! The attrition rate unfortunately in our age group is high and each cycle is different, so if you attempted another go, you never know you could get another 1 or 2 blastocysts.
It sounds like the protocol was good in terms of egg maturity and fertilisation rate. I know it’s disappointing when you expect to get more blastocysts especially based on your original numbers.
I’m really hoping that your PGT-A result is ok. Will be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Am feeling quite morose today, and struggling to work. I don’t want to make any snap decisions, but I need to decide whether to try a second cycle with my own eggs, or whether to move over to a double donor route. I only took DHEA and other supplements for around 5 weeks before my cycle, and only improved my diet during that time too. I’m wondering whether to do 2 solid months of DHEA, supplements and good diet/exercise - and have another go. When I mentioned that to the embryologist yesterday, she sounded very dismissive and implied that my chances are practically zero because of my age - and so I was on a hiding to nothing. My clinic also charges a fortune, so it’s a big decision to make. Thanks again for your kind message x
Hi Football61, just wanted to give you a little hope. I had my best IVF cycle at 44 with 3 good quality blasts, it was my 6th cycle. The two beforehand yielded 0 blastocysts but they wouldn't do the protocol I wanted and the doc was very pessimistic that I'd get any blasts in the future. I wanted to try one more time at a different clinic and tweaked the meds/protocol. I took DHEA which was very important for me because I have low testosterone and also myo inositol because I have a good AMH for my age. Have a think about what's right for you but don't walk away with any what ifs! Lots of luck whatever you decide.
My first cycle last month they collecfed 10 eggs, 7 fertilised, but only 2 made it to blast. Had a double transfer on day 5, but unfortunately ended up on a chemical pregnancy
My first cycle I had two eggs, both fertilised, one made a morula. My second cycle we got 6 eggs, 5 fertilised, four made it to blast, transferred one and froze the others. I'm now 4 weeks pregnant. What a contrast though, I thought for sure after my first cycle it was hopeless.
hey lovely I go for my transfer today haven’t heard anything from day 3 so hoping I at least have 1 blastocyst. It’s my first round of IVF, first transfer. Good luck I hope it results in a healthy baby 🤞🏻🤍
mine was 6 embryos on 4day. Then on transfer day they told me that they will freeze 4 of them and 1 will be transfer. So 1 couldn’t make it to 5day. Today 12dp5dt is positive 🎉
thanks for sharing and sorry to hear you’ve had to go through so many rounds. This is my first and definitely seems like most people need more than one cycle so I’m preparing myself x
our first egg collection actually worked (4th embryo 3rd transfer from that round with 6 blasts but that was after 6IUIs too). We are now in a quest for a sinking hence the other egg collections so I agree defo best to prepare for the long haul but hope for sooner 🤗💜 xx
I was 35 when we did our egg collection. We had 10 collected, 9 mature and 8 fertilised. 2 made it to blastocyst. We were so lucky and had success with our first transfer 🧡 Got one frostie in the freezer! Wishing you all the best!!! Hopefully it is a great call for you! I almost found this wait the hardest! 🧡
I've done 1 egg collection, and they collected 8 eggs, 8 were mature and 8 fertilised. 6 made it to blastocyst. 1 did not survive the thawing. I think it is very different. Good luck on your transfer. Sending baby dust your way x
I had 10 retrieved, 7 fertilised and 3 made it to 5 day blasts Had the highest grade blast transferred and currently 16 weeks pregnant, with 2 in the freezer for future.
hi Grassfields I hope you’re keeping well, I don’t have official statistics, in our case it went like this:
11 eggs collected
9 eggs mature to be fertilised
9 eggs fertilised
Day 3 update : all 9 embryos developing to this point so they recommended going to day 5 transfer
Day 5 transfer date: out of 9 , 3 made it to blastocyst, 1 transferred , 2 frozen. All others were kept under observation until day 6 to see if anything else would develop to be suitable for freezing.
Day 6 update: unfortunately the other 6 didn’t get to develop to be suitable for freezing.
Although we’d have liked a few more to develop ,we were happy with our results as we got 3 very good quality embryos. At the end is quality over quantity, so hopefully you’ll get some good ones to freeze and a very lucky one xx
Wishing you al the best of luck in your journey xx
I had 12 collected (2 very small ones) 7 fertilised as the 2 small ones didn't make it. Got to day of transfer and 6 matured to blastocyst and the remaining one didn't catch up. Had 2 transferred fresh and froze 4.
Like others have said everyone's are different. Good luck with your journey xxx
So we got one blasto which was transferred in today. Unfortunately the others don’t look good enough to freeze but they’re going to give them another 24hrs. It would be nice if at least one was good enough to freeze as a back-up as the FET wasn’t the best grade (4BC) and I’m already righting it off, much to my partners disdain! He’s the optimistic and I’m the realist!!! Just have to keep our fingers crossed 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Good luck Grassfields. The grading thing is only a beauty contest, there is no way of knowing the embryos’s genetic competence.
I hope it works out for you and try and stay positive x
