Short/ ‘incompetent cervix

Hi there. I was told on my last ultrasound guided FET (which incidentally failed as my uterus is up the wall bacteria-wise as I have persistent thrush following a course of antibiotics I needed after surgery on an ectopic caused an infection) that I have a short cervix. The consultant thinks that it might be why I had the ectopic, as it wasn’t ultrasound guided and put too high up- they didn’t know I had this then. Is anyone else in this position with this diagnosis? I know it might be irrelevant in the conception journey, it might only be problematic if I were to fall pregnant x

Hi there, I was told I had a short cervix at FET and it was completely normal when formally measured at 20 weeks so I think it can be subjective. Did they take a measurement?

No they didn’t, he didn’t say it was abnormally short, but shorter than average so could be an issue. Don’t know why I’m even thinking so far ahead, need to actually get pregnant first! That’s interesting that yours was fine later on. Hope all went well for you! X

You are absolutely allowed to think as far ahead as you like as we all want the same outcome and anything we can do to help we will. Have you tried probiotics to try & help fight the infections? I tried this and my FET was successful after 6 attempts. Might be purely coincidence but no harm trying. Good luck going forward.

yep throwing the kitchen sink at it- Canesflor, oral lactobacillus probiotics, sauerkraut 🥴 🥬 ! Also given up refined sugar (my Achilles heel) as believe that can cause a flora imbalance too. Glad things worked out for you thanks for the advice x

Good work! I take my hat off to you for the refined sugar as that was definitely my Achilles heel too. It’s hidden in everything 😩. I did have the occasional treat 🙂. Sometimes you just cannot refuse the Jaffa cake🙀

I’m going to the seaside for a few days at the weekend so I expect to relapse there for sure with all of the temptation! Sugar is literally in everything- thought I’d have a bag of crisps yesterday- nope! Sugar was ingredient number 3 😵

I have a short/incompetent cervix, from 2 rounds of LLETZ treatment. It wasn’t identified on IVF scans though - it was picked up at a 16 week appt with my daughter (naturally conceived). I had to have an emergency stitch. We then lost our second daughter (naturally conceived) just before 20 weeks because the preventative stitch failed. I’ve got a permanent stitch now (TAC - transabdominal cerclage) but haven’t managed to successfully conceive since then (tried naturally for 2 years after always conceiving quickly before). We have had 3 IVF transfers now but one was query ectopic, one was loss at 10 weeks and most recent was BFN. I’ve always been told my cervix issues shouldn’t be a problem getting pregnant - it’s only when it gets to about 15 weeks that it starts becoming risky. I’m hoping like the above poster that it’s nothing to worry about in your case - cervical length checks are notoriously inaccurate unless you’re pregnant. So hopefully yours isn’t actually short! 🤞🤞 just make sure that when you do get pregnant, you push for length checks from 14 weeks at the latest! Good luck in your journey ✨🤞🍀

Thanks nightingale. So sorry to hear about your losses 😥 need to concentrate on the getting pregnant bit first and worry about that later- will definitely be vigilant about it if (and that’s a very big if) I get that far x
