a little advice from my midwife to all the bleeders out there

I am currently 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Well I hope I still am. Who knows. I have just spent 2 days bleeding 🩸 like I’m on my period changing pads every hour and a bit. Passing clots in toilet etc. NO cramping. My beta on Wednesday was 2474,0 I/UI

As there is no way in telling if little bean is ok (no heartbeat at this stage and beta will be redone on Tuesday) I have to wait and “rest”. Like resting made the blood stop 😏

I finally asked her what she thinks is happening as someone who has had 7 miscarriages I ain’t that hopeful. She told me would be very rare at this point to be a miscarriage as progesterone was high and still on it and embryo was a 5 day AA blast.

She gave me this explanation:

it’s to do with the trophoblast reaction, so the embryo wanting to deeply dig into the endometrium

Then maternal vessels are opened and it bleeds "from the side".

Also, it is more common after IVF. Over 80% of women have a bleeding sometime in the first three months. It is super common.

I just wanted to share this with anyone like me worrying and counting every hour till some news wether good or bad comes my way.

many major bleeders out there with success stories? I’m talking major blood at some point. Standing in shower with blood running down my legs major 😌

Hey lovely,

I’m not on here often these days but just saw your post and wanted to send you a big hug! I’m so so hopeful for you that this is a sticky bean but I know given your history why you are so worried.

I hope it helps to hear that I had a huge bleed early on when I was pregnant with Zach (my second little miracle). I mean, soaked through all my clothes, was huge. Far far worse than when I had previously had a miscarriage to be honest, the only big difference was I had no cramping at all whereas was in a lot of pain with my loss. It turned out to be a subchorionic hematoma and apparently they are quite common in IVF pregnancies.

Sending you lots of hugs and I hope the next couple of weeks hurry on up for you so you can get a scan and some definitive answers xxx

thank you love. So nice to hear from you and what a reassuring post. Made me feel so much better thank you! How long did the bleeding last? I’m day 3 of proper blood all day long :-(

I'm currently 6 weeks and started bleeding. No cramps yet but I just woke up and my breast tenderness has disappeared. Did you experience this? I know these signs are usually indicative of a miscarriage so not feeling great. Might go repeat hcg as till 3 days ago it was still high and doubling but now it may show if there is a problem.

In terms of bleeding and still being pregnant - yes same as you, huge bleed, running down in shower but no cramps. It later eased off and I had my cervix checked and it was closed, I was 6 weeks. Spent the weekend believing it was all over before having a scan and saw the heartbeat and all was well. I had been spotting brown blood before the bleed then continued to spot brown, pink and red afterwards until around 12 weeks (coincidentally when stopping meds) - I won't lie I was constantly anxious and hated going to the toilet but had 5 scans and everything was perfect (until the 20 week one but it was unrelated to the bleeding, baby had very rare congenital abnormalites).

So a bleed does not mean the pregnancy won't progress.

I was told throughout that bleeding was common but it does not make it easier does it, the worry steals the joy, each time I had a scan I would feel better for a day or two then back to worrying. I really hope everything is fine - your beta and no cramps are really good signs, just try and keep your mind busy until the scan if you can. Really sorry about your previous pregnancies xx

Breast tenderness was not a good indicator for me as it came and went which I think is common, I had a 'full' feeling in them more often than soreness. It is a good sign that there are no cramps. If it is bright red bleeding or a lot of it then it is worth being checked, they scanned me at 6 weeks 4 days. But if it is brown it and a little amount it is usually old and they say not to worry. Of course we will all worry anyway but try not to read into every little symptom as they can come and go and also the meds can cause them too rather than the pregnancy x

Infragilis in reply toTrying6years

Thank you for your reply. I have my scan tomorrow which should give us more answers. The tenderness came back and the bleeding stopped. I checked my hcg which has continued to rise so I'm hoping tomorrow will be ok but you never know with these things! Thank you again for your reply, appreciated.

yes had lots of bleeding much more than miscarriage I described it as a crime scene! I had it twice like like with hug clots but bleed continuously for about a month. It was a subchorionic hematoma which does put the pregnancy at higher risk of miscarriage as it can detach the placenta so it was lots of rest for me and by 8-10 weeks it had resolved itself luckily and they could no longer see it at my scans (I was scanned weekly from 5.5 weeks until then. I did have some cramping but I think that was due to passing the huge clots through my cervix (which was still ‘long and closed’ at the scans. I hope it all works out for you I know how extremely scary it is and the constant feeling of anxiety 💜 sending love xx

Hi Corchi,

For our first IVF FET we had bleeding around week 7. It was bright red and we were convinced it was a miscarriage. Went for a scan and were told everything is fine, it’s just implantation bleeding.

Wishing you all the best.

It’s definitely an emotional journey. We were lucky that we now have a little girl however since we have been through OHSS, 4 failed FETs (with PGTA tested blastocysts) and 1 cancelled. Starting to lose hope we will have a second.

Sending love and hope it all turns out well.

I had a sub chorionic bleed from about week 7/8 to 32 weeks. The first month or so, I had massive clots with it. It was like a downpour most times, so scary. It lessened over time but I still bled up to 32 weeks. It was a natural conception and she’s now a fiesty 5 year old delivered by planned c-section at 39 weeks!

It’s terrifying but try to stay positive. Keeping everything crossed for you xx

Sorry I don’t remember when my breast heaviness stopped, I think probably around the 10 week mark, but it could have been that I just got used to it or was distracted by all the bleeding x

Hi Corchi, another fellow bleeder here! I had two massive bleeds (soaked through underwear, pad and clothes) when I was about 5/6 weeks too. I had some weird stabby cramps at the same time. I was certain it was a miscarriage but turned out to be a haematoma and I'm now 19w! Keeping my fingers crossed that you have something similar xxx

thank you so much. Waiting for beta results any minute. Xxxx

I had 2 major bleeds in first 7 weeks also on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day so no where even open to get checked … first time on toilet the bowl was full of blood went on for a day second time again on toilet and bowl full of blood this went in for few days with tissue also coming out scans I’m 4 th Jan when ivf clinic opened showed cervix closed … I was still having brown spotting at this stage and they just said it’s not coming from baby or sack - I couldn’t believe it that the baby was still there after all the bleeding. The spotting lasted weeks my nerves were wrecked

Corchi profile image
Corchi in reply toGemstone78

oh wow identical to me. I have bled more in last 3 days than in any period. Chunks coming out the size of a burger. Horrific blood bath. I’m numb because I just can’t believe baby would be ok. Went to do beta today in an open hospital. Waiting for results in next hour

I can imagine. Mine is Tuesday and I’m feeling sick. Will do a beta test tomorrow so I know otherwise what’s point :-(

Infragilis profile image
Infragilis in reply toCorchi

Yeah the beta tests are putting my mind at ease a bit, although my doctors keep telling me to stop testing as it's for nothing. I don't know why they said that because I find that knowing there is development helps.

I was a work one day I was was 5+5 weeks pregnant, felt like a sense of pressure! Went to the toilet and had heavy bleeding and clots! I was heartbroken! Hcg was really high through, scan revealed baby ok but did have an area of bleed seen on scan so told to keep everything crossed! Had another big bleed at 9 weeks! Guessing area of bleed (bruise/ hematoma) bled out and nothing noticed at 12 week scan!

It was a super Rocky scary start but I’ve made it to 23 weeks, feeling positive this baby is my take home baby.

I have everything crossed for you my lovely ♥️

I am literally going through the exact same thing right now at 5 weeks 4 days. I am bleeding and passed big clots on Sunday. When I rest no bleeding except a little after wiping.

Your story is giving me so much hope 🤞

Mine was a 5 day FET AA.

I am going for an early scan on Wednesday trying to cling onto hope whilst being realistic!

Sending you all the luck in the world ❤️
