letrozole & false positive pregnancy tests

Evening all, hoping for some advice please!.

I have pcos and have had one cycle of letrozole so far to help. By day 18, my scan looked as though I had responded well and I had 2 follicles measuring at 19 so I had high hopes for this month. Unfortunately though I started having cramps about a week after ovulation, and so I took a pregnancy test (actually 2 tests) which were negative and k began what I believed to be my period a week on from the first cramps. however this period has been very different, I’ve barely bled, I had some bright pink blood (what o would probably call spotting honestly) then some brown blood but nothing more, I did though begin to take letrozole for the second time as I had believed my period was here.

I decided after a couple of days of letrozle to take another pregnancy test this evening because my bleeding has stopped entirely and just to clear my head as it was lying around, to my disbelief it was positive (a clearblue digital) 1-2 weeks stated. I had to take another to be sure, but the second said not pregnant and I feel so lost.

Is it that my positive test is only the letrozole I’ve taken causing levels to raise? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Please share, I don’t know how to think or feel. The joy at seeing “pregnant” only to see “not” an hour later has left me so confused.

hi Hannah! It sounds like you tested too early to start with so got some negative tests. Then you may have experienced some implantation bleeding! Then a positive test (yay!)

The last one did you say was only an hour later? Then I would guess your urine was too weak. Is it past your OTD yet? Either wait for tomorrow's first morning urine, or have at least a 4 hour hold to get an accurate result 😃

Hi Hannah-Coco,

I have only done FETs, but from from what I read:

1) on top of letrozole did they give you a trigger shot that contained HCG and that might explain the positive test ?

2)have you tried to do a new first response test today with first morning urine ?

I know it can be heart breaking to see a positive test turn into a negative. I had a chemical pregnancy and was so so upset, but everyone kept on telling me that it was a good sign as it meant things could work.

ahh also Hannah, my understanding is that letrazole can give a false positive on an ovulation stick (increased LH) but NOT a false positive on a pregnancy test! That measure hcg, and letrazole doesn't give you any hcg!!! The only was to have hcg is if an embryo implants (or a trigger shot) - but as you had previous negatives I assume you didn't have a trigger, or it had worn off anyway!

So sounds like implantation to me!

Thank you so much for your replies Lsand and Habibi.

I did have a trigger shot but this was ok the 30th August so 19 days ago now, and as you say I have had negative results perviously.

My OTD would have been Wednesday but as I say I was having very light (brownish) bleeding so thought my period had just started on the exact date expected.

I have done another digital test this morning, first urine of the day and this one is positive again, do you think I can trust this one now? 2 positives and a negative last night after my positive (about an hour or so later)

Great news about the test this morning ❤️ It does sound like it was implantation bleeding and the test is saying that your pregnant! I would call the clinic to let them know so that they can tell you the next steps (blood tests / scan). ❤️❤️

Unfortunately looks as though this is ending as a chemical pregnancy, my joy didn’t last long. What a horrible feeling this is, good to know you don’t go through it alone xx
