Incomplete miscarriage advice

Hello ladies,

Just before Christmas it was confirmed that my pregnancy was a blighted ovum.

I decided to wait and let my body miscarry naturally. I bled for a 10 days, with one of those days losing clots and painful cramping.

I went to A&E on Sunday due to difficulties sitting down, as it would cause severe cramps but all bleeding had stopped.

The doctor checked my blood, confirmed no infection but that my hcg count was still very high and believed the pregnancy has not fully passed. I am due for another scan Friday,

Does anyone have experience of this and has anyone chosen to have the medical intervention or gone to have a D&C? Just looking for experience of both.

Many thanks xx

First let me say how deeply sorry I am of your loss. I recently went through a missed miscarriage at 7 weeks in November just gone and it was by far the worst experience of my life. I also waited to let it happen naturally but after waiting over two weeks I ended up going to hospital to have medication. I didn’t opt for the surgery as I heard stories that it could of affected future pregnancies but 5 hours after having the medication my miscarriage began. The medication is inserted which can be uncomfortable but it got rid of everything and I took a test three weeks after and all was ok. In total the bleeding lasted around 7-9 hours. I haven’t had the operation but I know that is normally done in 20mins. Xx

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Thank you for replying and sharing your experience. I have also heard stories about the surgery and possible effects it can have on future pregnancies. It's unfortunately a decision I wish none of us would ever have to ever make. All the best to you xx

I’m so sorry for your loss 💔

With my miscarriage, I planned to have surgery as it was recommended by my doctor. The night before and morning off surgery, I actually passed most of the pregnancy at home but still went in for the D&C as they wanted to make sure my miscarriage was “complete”. It was over very quickly, and I bled for maybe 9 days afterwards but lightly. For me, the experience of a D&C, whilst incredibly hard and distressing, was pain free and really quick. I was put to sleep, didn’t suffer any complications and felt like I could then focus my efforts on rebuilding my mental strength.

Everyone has a different experience but passing the pregnancy naturally wasn’t my preferred choice, I found that much more difficult and painful than the surgery.

Sending lots of love xx

Thank you for your reply and providing your experience. I am very sorry about your miscarriage. The D&C is an option I really should consider and having yourself share your experience has given me that opportunity, so thank you.

All the best to you. Xx

I am so sorry for your loss and what you going through... 😔I found out at in the begining of december that there was no heartbeat anymore... i waited about 2 weeks befre I decided on having the medicated way as I was too scared to do the D&C as I wouldnt choose any option which could effect me getting pregnant again... It was like a natural miscarriage but like this I just knew when its gonna happen which made it slighly easier...

On the day they gave me the medication they told me to do a pregnancy test 3 weeks later and go for a scan if its still positive... I miscarried the same day...

I had a positive test so they asked me to go for a scan a week later, which came back clear...

It took quite a while to pass everything...

Hope it will be all ok for you at the scan on friday!

Hi,I am so very sorry you are having to experience this and it's so sad that so many of us experience it.Just to share my experience I had no heartbeat at a scan at around 7 week. I waited 2 weeks and my body still didn't catch up and the emotional stress of having morning sickness and waiting was too much so had the medical management. I found it really painful but thought it was over then 4 days later I ended up in a&e bleeding very heavily and needing morphine for the pain as sadly the sac couldn't pass through my cervix. I wish I'd been prepared more for how long it all took and physically painful it was but think everyone's experiences are different.

I know someone recently had the surgery and said it was pretty much painless and no complications but hope the scan shows all us okay and it's just that it'll take a while for hgvs levels to go back down.

Take care and again sorry for your loss xx

Hi Blue-cat33, I am sorry for your loss. It is so painful emotionally and on top of it physically. Not sure if my experience might help but my first early misscarriage was incomplete too. A small bit of endometrium stayed in and I kept bleeding slightly for 3 weeks waiting if it resolves but it did not. I had a few scans during that period to see if the bit was still there too. I was told medical management unlikely to help since my misscarriage happened already. So went to have D&C and all good after that. It still took a few days for my hormones to go reset though. The second one I went for D&C straight away. It took over 3 months after the procedure for my body to reset hormones though.

I am saying this because your hcg will take time to come down regardless of the management you choose to have. I think the scan you will have will give you a better idea of how complete/incomplete the process was rather than hormone levels.

I hope you get through this and recover quickly.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry for both of your losses. I didn't really think about how long it can take my hcg levels to come down. As you say, see what the scan tells me and go from there. Thank you.

All the best to you xx

Hi I am sorry for your loss. This happened to me. I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks and opted for surgery as the baby had stopped growing at 7.5 weeks but my body hadn't realised and I wanted it over and done with. I had the surgery and was sent home and told to do a pregnancy test in 3 weeks - which I did and it was still positive. It took 3 more visits to EPU before they finally agreed to do an HCG (they kept scanning and saying they couldn't see anything) and my HCG was still over 15,000. They told me because they couldn't see anything on the scan it would be better to have repeat surgery again but with a camera this time to make sure everything was removed. So I went back in and had a second lot of surgery.

At the time they advised me that it wasn't a good idea to have medical management and surgery was much more advisable to be sure that everything was gone and to minimise the risk of infection.

It was a tough time, worse than any of my other miscarriages so I am really thinking of you. You kind of go through it all, and think you are out the other side, and then get hit by endless positive tests which is what you have always hoped for, only you this time want negative ones because you think it should all be over. Sending you the hugest hug xx

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience with me. I am sorry about your loss. It sounds like you went through a traumatic time. Hard enough with one surgery, let alone two. As you have said, it is hard on you physically and having to still see a continuous positive pregnancy test can feel like a punch to the gut, when you know it's not what it should be.

I hope you have recovered and I wish you all the best. Xx

So sorry for your loss, I am going through the same thing right now. My 7wk viability scan showed the pregnancy sac was measuring a week behind with a slow fetal heart rate, we were told to prepare for the worst. The follow up scan a week later confirmed I had miscarried but my body didn’t recognise the pregnancy ended. I opted to miscarry naturally and didn’t start bleeding until 3wk3d later. I had a night of bad cramps and heavy bleeding then things subsided.

However a week later I was still bleeding and noticed a bad smell. I went to the EPU and they found some tissue blocking my cervix. After they removed it, I bled heavily for 4 hours, passing huge clots. The smell was because the tissue was infected. They admitted me and started me on IV antibiotics. I was also given medical management to try to expel any remaining tissue. Eventually the bleeding subsided and I was discharged home the next day.

Unfortunately a follow up scan 2 days later revealed the tissue was still there. They advised further medical management was unlikely to work due to the infection (it prevents the uterus from contracting as effectively) so the only option was surgical management. Initially I was against this as I didn’t want to complicate further pregnancies, but in my case the infection meant I had no choice. I had MVA under general anaesthetic the next day. It was a 10 minute procedure and I was back on the ward shortly afterwards. It was painless, I have some very mild cramping and minimal bleeding but on the whole I feel fine (I had the procedure yesterday). I have to take a pregnancy test in a few weeks to make sure the miscarriage is complete. I am also on antibiotics and iron tablets.

I think my experience is rare, most women dont suffer complications. I am sharing this to give a full picture of what can happen and let women know you are not alone if this happens to you. For me, the the emotional pain has been far worse than the physical. Do what you feel is right for you and take good care of yourself.

Hi, I am so sorry for your loss and am thankful to you for sharing your experience. I appreciate you giving me a full picture of what the potential outcome could be. It sounds like you have been through so much. I don't think anything or anyone can prepare you for the emotional side of what we go or can go through. But I appreciate you saying we are not alone, which this forum has shown thankfully and unfortunately due to the circumstances.

I wish you all the best in your recovery and all the best to you for the future. Xx
