Conscious sedation

Update: So was kind of out of it, remember first part with a little discomfort then they had to press on stomach as left ovary was a bit high and then felt painful, think they must have given more meds because I can’t remember the rest until I was being taken back to ward but still very sleepy, 15 mins later was awake. Thanks for all your supportive comments x

I have my egg retrieval tomorrow morning. What is the conscious sedation like? Will i be able awake or actually asleep like a general anaesthetic? I’m more nervous of that than the retrieval! Although i have a cyst on my right ovary and they have to go through it 😬

Hi I was worried about this too as I had general anaesthetic for my first then sedation for my second.

When I was sedated it was like being knocked out. One minute they were asking me what my favourite drinks were then next thing I was in my room in a bed. Good luck, you'll be fine!

Enjoy it! Probably my favorite part of IVF, it’s like the best sleep you’ve ever had and don’t wake up feeling terrible like with general anesthetic. Best of luck x

I agree with Patches. It's the best sleep ever and you recover pretty quickly. Good luck today, you'll be fine xx

Hi lovely, I had the exact same fear. The ladies on here put my mind at rest and said it was nothing to worry about and they were right. I don’t remember a thing and had a good snooze! I had been moved to another room before I come round. The best thing I found was when I had a general I always felt so groggy and horrible after. With the sedation I was no sooner back and was up nipping to the loo and get changed to go home. I also have a cyst on each ovary. Good luck for the egg collection xxx

Yep agree! It was great. One minute in theatre the next back in the room in clinic. Felt nothing and it was all over! No grogginess either!

Conscious sedation is what I had. Honestly they had to double up my pain medication cause I could feel what they were doing. I didn’t like it! It was painful. Then 3 days later I got OHSS. I wish they had just knocked me out and I woke up in my room. But everyone is different. My friend used the same clinic and didn’t feel a thing.

I had massive issue like you nowhere near enough pain meds. This was my 4th retrieval and had it been my first I would never ever of done it again. I hate that my clinic have moved to this from sedation. A cost saving exercise that isn't translated to the cost of treatment.. was so upset.

I totally agree. When I was laying there and they started I could feel the poking was was asking for more meds, so the nurse pumped some through the IV dip and then I was asking for more and they were hesitant to give me more but did. I would never do it again either; not that way. Then when I came out the room they were trying desperately for me not to sleep and I ended up throwing up. It was rough. Everyone should be placed asleep. Egg retrieval is no simple thing.

Hey, I had my egg retrieval yesterday and they will ask u how sedated you want to be. Well my clinic did anyway and I told them that I don’t want to remember anything and it felt to me like as close to a general anaesthetic as it can but no breathing tube is put down ur throat which is good. My right ovary behaved itself, my left ovary wouldn’t as all my scans it’s been difficult to find as it was quite high up and close to my uterus so they tried to get into my ovary but couldn’t do all my eggs came from my right ovary. Got 7 eggs yesterday so will see how they went on last night and my transfer is on Tuesday so wish me luck

It’s absolutely fine honey I was really nervous going in and they were chatting away to me before I knew it I woke up and they were counting my eggs still and someone was shouting out how many they’d got 😂 actually quite a refreshing little snooze haha! So you do fall asleep it a heavy sedation that puts you into sleep a deep enough sleep bit to know what’s going on xx

My partner found out how many eggs were collected before me! He had a call from the clinic regarding his sample. When i text him he was like I already know!

My experience with the conscious sedation for EC was wonderful - initially a little pain, but they gave me a bit more and next thing I remember is being woken up as I was wheeled to the recovery area - asking how many eggs they had got! The rest after was lovely! But I felt sore the next day, but nothing too bad, only needed one dose of Paracetamol and was fine after that!

Mainly just wanted to wish you all the best with your egg collection this morning! 🤞🥰

Thank you x seems I have had a very similar experience, except was so sleepy i didn’t ask about eggs until dr saw me lol. Yeah in a bit of pain, tablets and hot water bottle are doing me good ☺️ x

It appears people have very varied reactions to conscious sedation! I didn't feel at all woozy, was completely awake and able to follow everything! I only felt one prick on the needle but it wasn't too bad at all! I was surprised when it was over and asked when I was going to feel 'out of it'! I didn't at all, it was all done and I walked out with no problem!! Good luck how exciting xx

I had what my clinic called the 'gin and tonic' sedation!! Was aware of what was going on but not 100% 'in the room' then had a nice snooze when I was back in recovery! As others have said, wasn't as groggy after it as you would be with a general anaesthetic either which was really good. Good luck with everything! Xx

Hi, my first time I was under and asleep. It was OK but I was groggy afterwards and felt 'off' all day and just spent the time recovering at home. However, the second time around they changed their procedures and like PurplePiggie I was conscious and awake. The sedation makes you feel a bit out of it, although I was awake and aware of what was going on and everyone was talking me through the procedure. I didn't experience any pain. Afterwards I didn't feel the need for a sleep but just chilled in my bed as the sedation wore off. To be honest I was upset as they had only been able to get 2 eggs. But I felt much better after the procedure than I had when I was asleep and much preferred the conscious sedation and felt I recovered and felt 'normal' much quicker.

When I had mine I was awake and aware of everything, it wasn’t that painful to me, if it was they said to use the gas and air which I didn’t need to use x
