Sedation for Egg Collection

Hi all,

I am hoping to have my Egg Collection next Wednesday, but my clinic does sedation rather than putting you under. So as I understand it, I'll be awake through the procedure but won't remember anything about it..

I've never had any form of operation before, or been given anaesthetic so I just wondered if anyone had gone through the same?

I keep having an irrational thought that it will hurt during - just that I wont remember that it hurt... silly I know!

Hey Laura, my clinic use sedation too but I was asleep for the whole thing and didn’t feel anything. It just feels like a really nice calm and happy sleep when you wake up :-) xx

I was sedated and dont remember a thing nor did I feel a thing and I was so sure I was alert after they administered the drugs.....clearly not. Apparently was chatting throughout. Hopefully will be the same for you, try not to worry!xx

Hi Laura

Please don't worry, sedation means that you will be out for the count, unconscious and definitely not awake! I've been through it four times and actually find the sleepy half hour afterwards really pleasant. Bit of a tummy ache a couple of hours later, a bit like period pains, nothing to worry about.

Good luck, hope you end up with loads of lovely eggs! xx

Thank you all, its so helpful to talk to people who've been through it! I'll stop worrying and start getting back to feeling excited for the next stage :) xx

Bless you I was

Worries before but as everyone else said you are basically asleep just not as heavy as knocked out meaning you don’t feel as bad after. You don’t feel a thing it’s just a very heavy sleepy sleep xxx

Hi Laura

I felt exactly the same as you, that I was being conned into feeling it all while being awake just not remembering it after!

I had two collections with GA then the third under sedation (which I didn’t know until I got there, my same clinic changed their procedure!) and I worried I’d feel it all but honestly it felt the same to me. I was totally asleep and woke up quite happy!

I’m sure it will be the same for you, try not to worry and good luck xx

Hiya, I agree with everyone else. I had sedation and it was fine, don't remember a thing and felt really calm and chilled when I woke up. The first thing I remember is waking up in the recovery bit, they told me how many eggs they'd got, and then I asked if they'd fixed the tumble dryer.... 😂🙉🙈 good luck for wed! Xx

Thank you! Feeling a lot more relaxed about it now than I was. I'm excited to get onto the next step now I think - hopefully I have lots of eggs (first scan yesterday showed 9 follicles on my left but only 3 on my right) keeping everything crossed :) xx

My Dr told me to think about a nice place I'd like to visit as I went under and I remember waking up and first thing I did was complain that I dreamed about work!!! It'll be fine hon. Good luck xxx

The sedation is great, you fall asleep very quickly but it doesn't have the risks or recovery time of a general anaesthetic. You will have an anaesthetist there so IF you were to start waking up they can give you more drugs. Enjoy the sleep! X

Sedation is great - when I came round from my sedation from egg collection, happy crying and a bit drunk-like I was very loudly praising all the nurses for being so lovely and what a lovely room it was... My lap&dye the year before with anaesthesia wasnt enjoyable, panic going under and I got a bit mouthy to the doctor when I came round saying I felt like I had been poisoned... It seems I'm quite sensitive 😅 good luck!!!

I had a sedation too and the last last thing I remember was making some hilariously witty comment to the cute anaesthetic nurse (which wasn’t funny or clever at all) then waking up in a completely different room. It’s all good xxx

I'm loving all these sedation stories... I'm quite looking forward to seeing what I come out with now!! Although my EC might be pushed back a bit as I had my day 9 scan this morning and my follicles are still all too small :( xx
