Uterine septum

Hi All,

I’m having a hysteroscopic resection of my uterine septum.

I’ve been told I have a thick muscular septum at the top part and there is risk of increased bleeding.

Wanted to know if anyone had their septum removed and also how soon afterwards could you start trying or conceived?

Thank you all in advance :)

Hi, I had this done - twice! It didn't work the first time but thats really unusual and he didnt use a camera/ultrasound so must have been guessing haha.

It was a doddle and I hardly bled at all, maybe just a bit of spotting for the first 48 hrs. I also had some fibroids resected at the same time

I think I had to wait 3 months, but it went pretty quickly and I used it to get into shape!

Good luck x

Oh that’s good to know! If you don’t mind me asking did you get it done because you has miscarriages and also did you have any problems after the surgery? Xx

Hi, yes I had had multiple miscarriages and also they just suggested I get my womb in the best shape possible for a pregnancy seeing as we were paying for IVF (too old for NHS).

Unfortunately I miscarried twice more post the resection but they have put that down to old eggs and so poor quality rather than anything else, so maybe if my eggs had been a bit younger it might have worked. I am probably not the best example as I have heard of it working really well for other people :)

The surgery itself was super quick (45 mins) and I didnt have any issues with my recovery x

Hi Bump. Well, this can certainly be sorted for you, and the recovery is usually 3-4 months afterwards. Bit like sorting out large fibroids. My first successful one I was involved with, resulted in a boy who was named after an anegram of my name , poor boy. Obviousloy I do hope all works out for you - but think of some decent names please!! Diane

Hi Bump,

I had my septum resected in 2016 and I was left with a slight bicornuate uterus. Got pregnant twice really quickly after the coil came out (they put two coils in to stop the edges joining back up) but sadly both ended in early miscarriage. I had IVF not long after which resulted in my little boy who’s now almost 3. I had to have two-weekly scans from about 15 weeks to 24 weeks to check for cervical incompetence, but luckily no problems were found.

I’m sorry to hear about your losses and happy to hear about your success as well. Did you get the resection done due to recurrent losses?

I’ve have 4 miscarriages all before 7 weeks so not sure if the septum is causing the miscarriages as what I heard is that the septum causes 2 nd trimester miscarriage.

Also the septum resection was it laparoscopically or hysteroscope? Xx

Sorry to hear of your losses too. No, I couldn’t get pregnant at all before the septum was removed. We tried for a few years then I had a HyCoSy to see what was going on and it was discovered then. I had coils in for about 3 months after the resection, then got pregnant second month of trying after they came out (miscarriage at 6 weeks) and then again about three months later (miscarriage at 9 weeks). From what I’ve read, the septum can cause infertility or miscarriage in first trimester where the embryo implants on the septum (blood supply is low to the septum), or later miscarriages as baby runs out of room. Cervical incompetency can also be associated with mullerian anomalies (like a septum). There is a really good Yahoo group called Mullerian Anomalies which is full of loads of useful information (if you haven’t already seen it). Hope I haven’t scared you with all that, it’s really not that bad and sounds a lot worse than it is - the op is really quick and straightforward and most women with a septum don’t even know they’ve got it. I had a laparoscopically guided resection, so cameras in small holes in the abdomen but the septum is resected from inside the uterus - they look for the light from the hysteroscope blade shining through to tell when they have cut the septum enough. I’ve heard this a better method than hysteroscope on it’s own. Hope that helps and best of luck with everything xxx
