Just had my second scan during stims, I was told that we might cancel the cycle, my ovaries seems to play hide and seek. Anyone that encountered similar experience!?

I have one ovary that plays hide and seek. This should not necessarily be a barrier to collection though. You may not be able to locate it easily but it does not mean they should cancel it for that reason.

Worth exploring these questions with your hospital- is it one or both ovaries? Do they have someone that has a specialism in accessing difficult to access ovaries? Look at the article below for information and use it to ask questions

Trans abdominal retrieval is an option if your ovaries are really hard to get to. It is obviously a last resort.

Before I chose my current clinic, 2 were confident that they could retrieve my eggs even if the ovary was difficult to access whilst one said they could not access it. Needless to say I crossed the last one off my list!

I am still having my eggs retrieved the normal way even from my left ovary. My consultant presses on my abdomen to bring it into view.

Do you have fibroids and have a question about it? I have them as well and had one that got do big, it had to be surgically removed.

I hope you can get a solution to this. If your clinic cancels your cycle, then it is worth exploring a different clinic!

PM me if you want...

Hi JoyfulStar, I frosted today when consultant said we might cancel everything due ovaries being hard to find, specially the left one. I was told are/is behind the fibroids. I understood I have a small one, and a cluster of small ones. They always struggled to previous scans to see my left ovary in particularly, what I don’t understand why they didn’t say it earlier that is because fibroids!!? I’m going back for another scan this week and see again, hoping the ovaries would move position!!?if not surgery was mentioned to have them removed...I was worried all these days about my follicles, and boom :), another obstacle...

Our bodies never play nice do they they sometimes. I had this massive invasive surgery to remove a fibroid only to find out that I have like 10 other fibroids- it might not be 10 but if sounded like that when they did a very thorough exam. They just kept saying fibroid, then they found another and then another! I was told not to worry though as they were quite small in size.

Ask them specifically for the location of the fibroids and how they are affecting access to your ovaries. I don’t see why the fibroids should affect the location of the ovary. Your follicles grow in size when on stims.

Also ask them to think creatively about how they can see the follicles eg have they tried putting pressure on your abdomen and if someone finds it, they should make a note on your file how!

You get so many different nurses and doctors scanning you that it seems like you are starting from square one each time. Good luck 🙂

If the ovaries hides behind the fibroids, as you said, thru pressure can’t be moved?! Just thinking....I would so liked a second opinion on this, I guess we will be stuck with what our consultant is saying, being the only one in the clinic we are with

My left ovary has always been a nightmare, it hides behind my bowel or uterus pretty regular. I also have a large fibroid that blocks the view on lots of scans. I found one day my ovary would be there the next scan it was impossible to find.

From six rounds of IVF we have always proceeded with egg collection and there was only one round where they didnt manage to get to my ovary and it was the first time when they didnt realise it was a bit naughty. Since then they always allowed extra time and were able to manipulate it into a decent position by the nurses pushing on my stomach.

I am not sure about your fibroid reference but mine has never stopped me proceeding with IVF but it does depend where it is and what type it is. I would have hoped they would have picked ours up before the 2nd scan

Good luck x

Hi Daisy1245, that’s why I’m surprised/shocked today, because they knew about my fibroids. All the scans and the sonogram till now! Initially was not a problem just to keep an eye on them. I don’t understand... Will see at next scan what will happen.
