I’ve had many years of battling fibroids. My husband and I have tried on and off for 12yrs to get pregnant.
We’ve had 2 IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycles - fresh and frozen. The first fresh cycle was an early miscarriage and the second a BFN.
Recently I’ve had abnormal bleeding for the last 2 months. Brilliant as we were wanting to start our 3rd round. I suspect I have submucosal fibroids again. I’ve seen a gynaecologist and the IVF (in vitro fertilization) specialist and they have given me conflicting advice. The gynaecologist said that for me to have a successful cycle I should have my fibroids removed. The clinic says it’s not necessary to have the fibroid removed because it’s so small.
I’m so confused. I would have thought removing the fibroids would be better for my uterus?? Has anyone had problems with fibroids and had a successful cycle?
I’m so upset and confused as I don’t know what to do??

Sorry to hear about this. I also had conflicting advice from two doctors. After two years of listening to the doctor who was against fibroid removal i eventually hd them removed because when i decided to do IVF the ivf clinic said they could not do it because i had multiple fibroids. They ended up removing 14 fibroids. Only then did i proceed with ivf.
I had a myomectomy in 2016 which removed a 12cm fibroid and a 6cm fibroid. I have lots of little ones left over, but have been told that as long as they don't impact the endometrium, they won't cause any problems with IVF.
My first round earlier this year ended in a BFN but I had my baseline scan for round #2 yesterday and they are happy to proceed as the endometrium is nice and smooth.
I think ultimately, it depends where they are in the uterus.
Thanks guys for your response. It’s so hard making a decision with conflicting advice. I’m going to clinic to see the specialist again to see exactly where the fibroid is. I still have abnormal bleeding which leads me to wanting to have them out!! Watch this space.
I had a submucosal fibroid also very small. It was picked up when we went for IVF and they didn’t seem concerned. We got a BFP which ended fairly quickly in MC with bleeding. We then fell pregnant naturally and again didn’t Make it past 5 weeks. We found a new Consultant who advised removing the fibroid and making the environment as perfect as possible for conceiving as they thought this could be a factor, I had it removed in March. I fell pregnant naturally again last month and am now 7 weeks and have seen that little heartbeat! My advice is get them removed if you can and give yourself the best chance you can x
Thanks Tiffs this is what I am thinking as well. I’m just baffled why the clinic wouldn’t want me to remove a submucous fibroid if it’s impacted anywhere in the uterus.
I spoke to the clinic and they agreed that I should have the surgery due to the amount of spotting I am getting. She said that fibroid is submucous and about 1cm not very big but wouldn’t hurt to get rid of it. I will only need to wait 1 cycle and then we can start IVF again.
