It’s my first ICSI cycle and I have 2 frozen blastocysts - 1 is 5BB and the other 4BB.
My doctor has asked if I want 1 or both transferred: I am 29, it’s my first round of IVF and will be my first transfer as I didn’t have a fresh transfer after egg collection due to the lining of my womb.
Would you recommend to have 1 or both embryos transferred? We would be happy with twins but I am concerned if they both take and 1 splits. I am also concerned if neither implant, we won’t have any embryos left for another round.
I would be really grateful for any advice xx

Hi there, it’s a completely personal decision of course but as you are so young, they usually would recommend 1 for your first transfer. And then multiple embryos are a choice going forward (that’s been my experience too). I was told yesterday at my transfer that the chance of multiples for under 35s with 1 embryo is only 3% so obviously very small and unlikely if you transferred two that both would stick and one would also split.
There’s a slightly higher chance of becoming pregnant with a baby from a double transfer and the risk of multiple increases also.
There’s a really useful website called the duff and she clearly explains all the pros and cons for a single and double transfer which may also help your decision.
I found the fresh cycle I underwent quite hard for my recent cycle so, if I were in your shoes I would transfer 1 and then you still have another frozen emby to use either if you’re unsuccessful or want a sibling later! Both your embryos sound like amazing quality so you’re in a v good position to do single transfers
Hi hun, I’m at my 4th cycle and have always advised to transfer one because transferring one at a time the cumulative pregnancy rates are higher. You’re young, and if I were you I’d transfer the 5BB first and if it doesn’t work the other one the next time. Wishing you good luck 🤞🏻 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am 28 and i am advised to transfer one. I had a failed fresh transfer and now going into a natural FET. My Dr says she would rather me have one baby with a low risk pregnancy than have the risk of twins and have a high risk pregnancy. Also you still have the risk of twins with one embryo being transferred.
I am actually a twin and i was born 3 months premature.
I want to wish you the best of luck with your transfer ❤️🙏🏼🤞🏼 Xxxx
I’m surprised your clinic is advising transfer 2 on your first transfer at your age? Are you in the UK?? Most clinics have a minimum age of 37 and I know loads of older women in the U.K. are being told no double transfers due to covid
All I would say is if you have any health or medical doubts don’t transfer 2. I’m 37 and pregnant with twins and honestly it’s physically brutal. Not to mention the huge cost of raising twins eg childcare etc.
Also what is your partners or yours stance on future siblings? If you had twins first would you want to go again for IVF in the future for siblings?
Hey, I’m the same age and was advised to only transfer one embryo. My first cycle failed and I’ve just had my follow up - I asked about transferring two and she strongly advised against it for various reasons. One being my age, the second also my weight (I’m not underweight but I am small) and she said I’d carry a higher risk of premature birth and many other complications. It was enough to scare me off transferring two and trust her advice and guidance. We have one FET in January.
