Should I go for 1 or 2 embryo transfer?

Hi ladies,

I am 41.5 years old and got 2 embryos from 11 mature oocytes, 2AB and 2BB which were frozen last month. My ET size is 11mm on day 11 this month.

My doctor suggested me to go for both embryo transfer to increase my success rate.

I am already having a 9 years kid and wanted just 1 more child but getting pregnant is more important.

Would single embryo transfer make sense at my age?

Edited:- Thanks for all responses, it gave me immense moral support. I remember I broke down the day when I heard first time IVF from my doctor. Then found this forum that I am not alone, there are others too fighting along with me which gave me a lot of courage.

I have chosen single embryo transfer, read a lot sites where recommendation are single transfer for good quality embryo and to avoid complications related twins pregnancy, I have not done PGS,

Tomorrow is my FET, hoping everything would be fine.

Thanks for all your wishes, you would be in my prayers always!

My words of advice are always the same when it comes to a double transfer….only transfer 2 if you are prepared physically emotionally and financially to have twins (or triplets!) I know far far far more women who had twins from a double transfer than those that transferred 2 and had a singleton or failed round.(I have twins and it’s bloody brilliant and would have more tomorrow if I could!)

I transferred 2 and am now pregnant with 1. It's a very hard decision but my clinic also recommended 2 for me so I went with their recommendation. If you are happy to have twins financially and emotionally then go for 2 ❤️💫 huge good luck xxx

Hi Mom_Njai. I usually say to be advised by your specialist. Remember carrying twins would exhausting at your age, with another one to look after. If you are fit and well, then perhaps try the two embryos. Big decisions, but whatever you decide, I wish you huge success. Diane

Agree with the above and just to add: I’m assuming there’s also an additional expense if doing one embryo at a time, plus doing two is where you see increased chances that at least one would stick…From my experience, in case it helps: I was disappointed when they suggested I should do one at a time in my case (good quality embryos, but only two of them in that cycle). I thought it would be great since I would like two kids ideally and could get everything done in one go. Looking back, considering the risks, knowing how I’m struggling physically and it is just one, I am relieved we did one at a time even though the first transfer wasn’t successful.

I think you should really think about physical and financial impact, as well as your mental health in both scenarios before making a decision. Whatever will work best for your circumstances.

I just went with 2 waiting for my OTD. We don't have any children so open to chance of multiple pregnancy. Already had failed rounds and also they said they wouldn't freeze the other so had both put back in rather than discarding it. Would they freeze your other embryo?

There is no wrong or right decision. I went ahead with the specialist decision and we transferred 2 PGS tested embryos, we have 9 months old twins - a boy and a girl, what else should you wish for!?! I don't regret a second that we have twins. Pregnancy wasn't crazy hard, only last week was more difficult because my body started to "shut down" but i had the C section shortly after. Managing 2 babies at the same time is not the end of the world, especially that you have already experience with your 9 year old kid. Take into consideration your gut feeling also.

Best of luck

I transferred two and also have twins, a boy and a girl. They’re now 5.5 months old and they’re amazing! They were the result of my fourth transfer and second double transfer. My pregnancy was fine, a couple of hiccups but nothing major. And it’s hardwork having two but it’s also absolutely amazing and I’d do it all over again if I’m lucky enough to!

Sending you lots of luck, whatever you decide to do xxx

HeyBased on published research (not have it handy) the chances of having 2 blasts transferred instead of 1 is about %10 extra.

So if you have only 2 blasts left and you are okay going through 2 rounds of transfer if first not successful then I would go with one at a time to increase my chances in case the first one did not work.

Also I will have more time to change protocols for example if things did not go well the first time.

Anyways I agree with all who said you should be mentally and physically ready for twins as well if go by transferring two.

I wish you good luck with whatever you decide to go ahead.

Take care xo
