When to stop Progesterone after a fresh transfer?

Hope76 profile image

Am currently on 2 x 400mg cyclogest pessaries daily, my clinic said to stop them at 8 weeks. Am exactly 8 weeks today so am wondering if am meant to stop today or at the end of the 8th week of pregnancy?

They are closed now so can’t phone them.

The nurse did say at my scan on Monday to go down to one a day for a week. So am thinking may do that starting today, does that sound about right? I feel a bit weird coming off them even though not a lover of them it just feels have been helping my baby grow and kinda worried they do some harm stopping ?

I was told to be on them till 12 weeks. But tbh that felt a bit generic as my progesterone was checked regularly, so i feel my clinic just say that to everyone.

I was on x2 a day and just stopped them rather than tapering off. I didn't question if it should be at the start or the end of tbe 12 weeks so did it at the start. Eek maybe I should have waited?

You could always take them today and call the clinic tomorrow to check. Don't think there is any harm is continuing.

Also it's sooooo nice coming off them! My bloated belly has drastically reduced and I feel so much better.

Enjoy the progesterone pessary free life!

Hi Hope, Congrats on your pregnancy! I’ve read really different things on here and it seems to vary per clinic. I am 8w3d and have been told to stay on them for 12 weeks but my consultant said he was only keeping me on for that long as I’d had some bleeding and he knew I’d be anxious coming off them. He told me that for his NHS patients he only gave it to them for 2 weeks and especially if it was a fresh cycle they aren’t needed as much as your body should be producing the progesterone anyway. I think if you are nervous then cut down to one a day to ease yourself off them and check with the clinic when they are open. 😊💕 xxx

Thanks, congratulations to you too. It’s an amazing feeling isn’t it 😘

Yes that makes sense for you to stay on them. Yes am going to stick to one a day for now & speak to them tomorrow x

I think every clinic is different, I am on 2x 400mg cyclogest and 25mg lubion daily. I was advised to continue until 12weeks.

It’s best you contact the clinic to be sure .

My clinic said I can stop at 9 weeks or when my prescription runs out. I plan on just using them till my prescription ends which will be about week 10. Seems pointless keeping them, so might as well continue with them till their gone. X

I also had a fresh cycle and on x2 400mg of cyclogest daily x

Thanks Claire that makes sense, I have enough to keep going until at least 10 weeks. Can’t see any harm in continuing past their recommended 8 x

Hiya,

I was told to stop the cyclogest pessaries at 10 weeks. I was very anxious about stopping them because I have read lots of people say 12 weeks. Touchwood I’ve been ok with stopping at 10 weeks. The doctor said your placenta should be taking over by then.

Hi thanks I know am anxious as everyone on here says 12. My clinic say 8 weeks for fresh and 12 for frozen. I spoke with them at length yesterday and they say placenta/my body will take over from 8 weeks. I have gone down to one a day and will keep going for another week.

I had frozen cycle and I was told 10 weeks ! I was worried and really wanted to do it till 12. Just have to trust the doctors and trust me it’s hard to do at times. I managed to stretch it to 11 weeks because I had enough left.

I know what you mean, I have plenty left too so thinking as likely to do more good than harm will keep going with one a day. Got enough for 12 weeks x

I understood to fnish at 12 weeks...but had a few left so continued until they all finished...it's supporting our lining...so why not...I got kinda used to them in the end...didn't like them...but only bonus they helped with going to the loo 🤣🤣

Ha ha I know what you mean regarding the toilet situation 😂

My clinic say 8 weeks for fresh, 12 weeks for frozen. I just feel so anxious coming off them this soon. I spoke to them yesterday and they agree I should go down to one a day for this last week since I feel so anxious coming off them. It is thought with a fresh transfer at 8 weeks the placenta takes over.

I think I stopped mine at around 10 weeks and as I had some left over I tapered down until they were gone. To be honest I did it more for me as I had a little bit of bleeding at about 10 weeks xx

Hi yes on the past I kept going to 12 weeks due to bleeding. However no bleeding this time. I spoke with my clinic yesterday they advised as I had a fresh single transfer there is no benefit to continue them after 8 weeks. It is thought my body takes over by then. I am however taking one a day for the next week as I just feel so anxious coming off them.

Well I was told to continue till 12 weeks, twice a day and I stopped at exactly 12 weeks. I was using lubion as well. Though I had bleeding at 5 weeks due to losing one of the twin which is why I had to start lubion. Wish you all the best.x

Thank you, I spoke with my clinic at length about it yesterday. They are adamant as I had a fresh single transfer there is no need to take them past 8 weeks but agreed I can go down to one a day for the last week as I feel so anxious coming off them.

12 weeks is best In my opinion ♥️

Thank you. My clinic advised 12 weeks for frozen and 8 weeks for fresh. I called them yesterday and they advise as I had a fresh transfer my body will take over from 8 weeks. I guess I have to trust their advise. I am still taking 1 pessary per day for the next week.

No no no you musn't stop at 8 weeks, as the placenta is not fully formed until 12 weeks which was when i was advised to stop with my son. However i had some left over from a previous cycle so i continued until week 14 ( albeit withdrew slowly over the 13th week) so in effect i cut the morning dose in half after the 12th week whilst continuing the evening one and then after a few days cut the evening one in half also. After a few more days it was just half a pesserie in the morning , then nothing. If you stop suddenly now at 8 weeks it might be detrimental to the developing embryo. Good luck with your pregnancy hun xx

Thanks to be on safe side I am staying on them despite my clinic advising my body will take over from 8 weeks. Their policy is only to advise 12 weeks for a frozen transfer. To be fair to them I stopped at 8 weeks with my first miracle and he was absolutely fine. As I have plenty left and am so confused with most being told 12 weeks for fresh also well am gonna play it safe and stick to 12. Thanks so much for your advise 😘
