My husband also has this, and our consultant told us to keep trying naturally while we waited for ivf. We just had our first cycle of ICSI and are waiting to see if it worked. So we didn't get pregnant whilst waiting, but our first child was conceived naturally and presumably he had this problem then too. Always worth a try!

Hi MrsH. Always worth a try. Make sure you have sex every 3 days, or more often if you want, to keep manufacture going. Try giving him a good quality multi-vitamin tablet for men, and some extra zinc and selenium which can some times help with the way sperm swim. Good luck, and if that doesn't work, good luck with ICSI. Diane

Hi MrsH17, I’m in same position as you and my husbands semen has improved dramatically after he had his varicocele embolised and has taken proxceed vitamins. I have managed to fall pregnant twice naturally in between failed ICSI cycles but ended in chemical pregnancies. So there is always hope, you should be keep trying naturally but being aware that the best chance will be with an ICSI cycle.

Also many have fallen pregnant after failed cycles as the high level of circulating hormones make you a little extra fertile the following month.

Best of luck x

Thank you for your response. The doctor never looked into why my husband has this. Would you say he should go back and ask him too? Xxx

Hi there,

My husband has the same and to this day we ask the clinic for closer look into the reason. They keep saying it’s unexplained but never did any further work up.

We’ve been trying in between naturally and still nothing, but worth some effort. Best wishes to your cycle !!

We still try even although my husband has a very low count....his is classed as severe....his first samples a few years ago showed less than 1 million per ml and recently it was less than 2 million per ml so pretty low. We got told at clinic it was highly unlikely to happen on its own however we figure its gotta be worth a shot....sometimes miracles do happen. xx

We were in a similar situation. It’s very difficult & stressful. I really feel for you.

Anything is possible (people conceive naturally in your situation all the time) but it does come down to a question of how long you can wait and how many goes you can give it.

Best advice we got during it all was for my husband to see a urologist who specialises in fertility. We only went once but it was just so good for for him to finally have a doctor listen & focus on him (and not me!) He recommended DNA fragmentation test which was v useful (we’d been told by previous doctors that this wasn’t relevant).

After 4 failed ICSI cycles, we moved to donor sperm on account of our age. Currently on 5 day wait from first donor cycle!

You will have your baby - it’s just a question of how you get there. It’s all worth giving a try. xxx

Thank you! No phonecall from clinic so far, so hoping we’ve made it safely to Day 6 with at least one embryo 🤞🏼🤞🏼 (doing PGS). xx
