I’m numb!

Today should have been a happy day. My husband is going to have his sperm frozen as a back up and then next week we have our first meeting with an actual fertility doctor to go through my protocol.

It was all up to Mother Nature after that, my period needs to arrive before a certain date in October in order for us to start before Christmas.

Saturday morning I woke up a little drained, as I do after working long hours all week but me and my husband were laughing and joking in the kitchen when the post box went.

He said you have a letter- I though probs junk mail for a loan or credit card. Opened it and my heart sank. A few weeks ago I went for a cervical smear. I knew I something would come up and deep down didn’t want it as I wanted to concentrate on IVF after waiting a year to start! A whole year!! I have abnormal cells and they need investigating. If it is they are likely to be cancerous I’ve got to have them removed there and then. Now it says if you are already pregnant then they don’t remove them until after giving birth but if you get pregnant in the future then there’s a risk a baby is born premature.

So I’ve obviously got to tell the clinic this as much as I’d like to lie and just go ahead with our first round. My mum said you need to look after yourself and I can’t just lie about something like this just because I want something so much!

I’m just so angry that this has got in the way! But also feel numb.

What have we ever done in our past life- we need a break. Everyone else seems to sail through life so happily around us. We just go through the motions.

Hunny this must be so frustrating, I remember after we had to wait the year and I stupidly thought that’s it our years up let’s crack on to then find out they had run out of funding for the year, I seriously thought we’d never get going and it’s so upsetting! But that was 18 months ago now and we’re just about to start our 3rd cycle and although it doesn’t feel like it right now the time will fly by! As for your abnormal cells the next smear may come back fine as they can change on there own accord which I’ve always found odd!! But if they do need blasting (I’ve had that done too!) it’s such a quick process and one that saves your life so your mum is definitely right to tell you to put yourself first. Sending lots of love x x

Hiya, I'm in the same predicament..

Due to start at end of October but got borderline cells in smear.

I have my colposcopy today, I will tell them about the ivf. If it needs treating but isn't bad enough to be done straight away, I'll see if they would delay to allow ivf to go ahead. But if it needs treating now, it's, best to postpone ivf to be treated. I will also ask if it can be treated at the appointment too xx

Hi lovely, I had abnormal cells a few years ago and they came back normal at the next test. I think if you have 3 tests of abnormal cells then it means you need them cortorised (spelling?) I'm not sure how long this might delay ivf if at all, but speak to your clinic. Xx

Hi Hun, my sis had some suspicious cells removed and her recovery was really quick so I hope it won’t delay you too much. Please get it done, despite the annoying time, if there is an issue ( hopefully it’s nothing) but if there is then catching it early can save your life. I know you are so desperate to start your family but it’s better you look after yourself so you can be around for them in the future. Also if your body is using energy to fight another issue, or if you’re worrying about an issue in your body you’re prob not in your best condition for ivf. Like others said it could be absolutely nothing and let’s hope after further tests it is nothing, but I think you give yourself and your future family the best chance by looking into it ASAP. xx

Hey I have had exactly the same thing happen - twice. A year ago we were about to start our IVF and had a dodgy smear and they did a colposcopy within 2 weeks - luckily in this case the cells looked fine so it didn't actually delay IVF.. you will find you will get seen very quickly.

We are/were about to start our fourth round when they said I had to go back and have another colposcopy because its been over a year.. they saw some dodgy cells and took biopsies. They said if they came back CiN 2 they would let me go ahead with IVF, if they came back CiN 3 then they would want to treat and suggest I wait - however it took 2 weeks to get my results back and my consultant said there was no way of stopping us if we decided to start on IVF before we got the results and they could actually treat if pregnant - they just didnt like to.

I am sure all will be fine and hope that things don't get delayed xx

I have had the procedure done. Honestly please don’t worry about it our clinic has said that it is only if u have the procedure a number of times it can weaken the cervix they aren’t concerned about mine at all xxx

Oh no, how frustrating! But at least you have got it picked up now rather than further on down the line. Hopefully your further investigation comes back clear and you can concentrate on moving forward with your cycle.

Hi there, I too had a dodgy smear a number of years ago, but way before starting IVF. It was at this time that I decided to come off my pill. I had a biopsy within weeks of the result and it came back at CIN2. I was told that I would need the cells removed and was booked in for a LETTZ procedure 3 weeks later. Once removed I was told they were in fact CIN3. And to think I had never had a dodgy smear previously. Within 2 months I had been diagnosed and treated and 6 months after, my smear was normal and has been since. It's good to look after yourself first and give yourself the best possibility. I know the waiting is horrible and you just want to get on and hopefully you get the all clear at your next appt and go ahead with your cycle. Good luck xx
