Hi my fertility specialist recommended Impryl supplement for addressing my MTHFR folic acid issue, but it’s £45 per month!
Wondering if I can just get a separate methyl folate and B12 supplement instead.
Does anyone have experience with these and know what dose methyl folate and B12 I should be aiming for? It’s not too easy to keep contacting the specialist and she wasn’t too helpful!

I don’t know about the other one, but I have b12 shots through my GP. I don’t know the dose, but it might be worth asking your GP. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Good luck
I recently found out that I am compound heterozygous for the MTHFR gene. I saw a Naturopath today as my Fertility specialist just advised me to take 5mg of Folic Acid per day (however Folic Acid can lead to an accumulation of unmetabolized Folic Acid in the bloodstream). The Naturopath has put me on a new pre-natal supplement (that contains L-5-MTHF and a higher dose of B12). In the book “It starts with the Egg”, it states that the typical dose for people with a MTHFR gene mutation is between 800-1000 micrograms per day. It is possible to undermethylate and overmethylate (depends on each individual and your needs) and there can be side effects if you overmethylate. The Naturopath will order some blood tests to review how I’m going and increase my dosage to 2 tablets per day if need be. It might be worthwhile to see a Naturopath - particularly one who specialises in MTHFR gene variants or if you go to the ‘It Starts With The Egg’ website and go to ‘supplements’, there are some suggestions there for people who have a MTHFR mutation (and some information on how to choose which one is best for you). Good luck! I hope you find something suitable. X
Thanks again for this. I found somewhere that it said 416mcg methylfolate is equivalent to 400mcg folic acid which is what is recommended for trying to conceive and pregnancy in the UK so I’ve decided to go with that for now.
What dose of B12 are you taking? In UK it says 2.4mcg is recommended in pregnancy but it seems impossible to find any supplements with such a low amount- the lowest I found was 5mcg but some were 1200mcg- it seems a bit of a difference!
I’m hoping to see my Dr next week so hopefully they’ll help me with this though I don’t know that they know enough about it all.
That’s okay 😊 I’m glad you managed to find something with a suitable level of methylfolate.
I’m not taking any additional B12 at the moment, but my pre-Natal vitamin contains 400mcg of B12. I have noticed a bit of a difference in B12 between pre-natals.
I hope your doctor is able to help you with the amount of B12 you should be taking. I would be interested to see how you go. Good luck! X
