Hycosy (blocked tubes)

Well...just got back from my Hycosy appointment, the pain was horrendous, and then at the end he tells me it looks like both of my tubes are blocked, but got to wait for official results another 4 weeks!

Gutted, don’t even know what happens from here, any advice welcome. Feeling sad 😣

I’m so sorry must’ve been a horrible shock for you. Mine was very painful too prob coz of endo. Waiting around for results are awful particularly fertility results. ☹️. Once you’ve had time to process it it will feel less raw & you will make plans going forward. I know it’s prob not what you want but so many people I know of have had ivf babies. It’s so wonderful so many people have a family thanks to IVF. Treat yourself to nice treats today & tomorrow is a new day you will come back fighting 🙂xxx

Thanks for your reply, definitely shocked, honestly thought they would be ok, is that the only way to go then, IVF?

Hi HOpe. Oh dear! It’s never a nice process, so well done for getting through the procedure. If it turns out that both your tubes are blocked, then it will probably mean IVF/ICSI to be able to conceive. To give you the best chance of this, you may be advised to have the tubes clipped or removed. The reason being, is that any excess lubrication in your tubes normally spills out into the pelvis. If tubes are blocked, then any excess can only leak into the womb. It is widely believed that this fluid can prevent a developing embryo from implanting - hence clipping or removal. You will hear of others on here, who have been through this and gone on to have a healthy baby. A lot to take on board, but your specialist will give you good advice. Thinking of you. Diane

Thanks for the reply, yes i was pretty shocked at how painful it was tbh.

Both are blocked, or Atleast thats what he said it looked like, if they both are, is IVF the only route? Or is that Laproasopy an option? Xxx

Hi HOpe. A laparoscopy is done under a general anaesthetic and keyhole incisions, to look around to see whether there are any problems and to diagnose. This would be done if you need to have your tubes clipped or removed. Diane

Did you have any idea they were blocked or any other symptoms? I'm convinced I have the same thing despite nothing so far being found wrong with me. I'm even asked my go to refer me having never been pregnant. X

H0pe2 profile image
H0pe2 in reply toJessy1280

No idea at all. Apart from never ever getting caught pregnant and not using contraception, so i knew something wasn’t right, but I’ve been reading up on endometriosis and i now realise that I probably have this, i am tired all the time, mood swings, ibs, all relate to endo, 😩 x

Thanks for the reply. I've never been pregnant. I have no endo symptoms and the clinic have never identified any problems with me on any bloods, scans etc. I've responded really well to meds too. I'm just convinced there's something wrong with me. Everyone keeps saying my oh is the problem with low motility but I'm not so sure. I'm now insisting on a hsg test to put my mind at rest x

It would be good if they could give you the HSG, i have been waiting for long time, al though im gutted at the result, atleast i have something to work on, hopefully...x

I had one blocked tube and went down the IVF route xxxx

Did you not try a laparoscopy? Xx

in reply toH0pe2

No didn’t see a point in it, there’s no guarantee with things like that, and ttcing was exhausting, would have just been more and more waiting and tbf I didn’t want to waste any more time it had already been nearly two years since I had my first miscarriage .... Also I had an ectopic so don’t really trust my tubes. I’m holding my 4 month old so for me was definitely the right choice xxxxx

Wow congratulations! I suppose i just have to wait and see what they advise, I don’t even know how bad or what they’re blocked with, as all

He said was the dye wasn’t reaching the ovaries, causing the pain 😩xxx

Ahh.. I will never forget the pain I had during the HSG. so it turned out that one of my tubes were blocked and the other ovary had a cyst. I was offered the laparoscopy route but decided to go straight into IVF. I just did not want to waste any more time. and if i had to go through surgery anyway then why not just do IVF. if both of your tubes are blocked then i think IVF is your only option... I was very upset when I got my results back but at least I was happy there was a diagnosis.

Thanks for replying! I am pretty sure he said he couldn’t see the dye coming out either end, meaning they’re both blocked, all seems a blur now tbh.

Glad its not just me who couldn’t deal with the pain!! Jesus was in agony!

Im kind of hoping they can be unblocked, wishful thinking! As my OH has kids so we wont get a round of free IVF either 🤦🏼‍♀️

This is exactly what happened to me, had to wait weeks for any information, its so draining, at the follow up I was told the only way to go was for keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic to try and unblock my tubes. So I had the surgery, all seemed to go well then had to go home and try naturally again for three months, at the 3 months I was referred to ivf clinic where they did an internal ultrasound and could see both my tubes were filled with fluid, which means the scar tissue blocked up my tubes from the surgery, only option now is to remove both tubes, which I'm waiting for and then ivf, it seems endless, treat yourself today, be kind to yourself, and at least now you might have some idea of what comes next.

I remember it being such a shock and the pain after the dye but you will be OK x

Thanks so much for this reply! I have treat myself too much i think and actually been spending all my money the last couple of days 🤦🏼‍♀️😩

I might call tomorrow to see if an earlier appointment has come up at all, feels like so long away when i know they’re blocked but thats all i know, not what with or whats causing it, or if it can be fixed 😣xx

My HSG was awful, so so painful and I threw up after as I think I went in to shock! Turns out one tube was blocked and one was damaged and leaking toxic fluid in to my uterus. Have now had both clipped and our only option is ivf now but I’ve come to terms with it and hoping next cycle we’ll have our blasts transferred xx

The shock was horrible, i was on my own too, just tipped up thinking all would be fine. Rude awakening. The nurse was who was helping the Dr was lovely though. Always knew deep down something wasn’t right xx

It’s so horrid, but I think for us, we just would never have got pregnant while my tubes were like that, so as awful as I felt - I hope it was the right thing to do. Will find out in a month or so I guess xx

just for the sake of balance for anyone searching about people's experience of having a hycosy (like I did a week ago and was terrified), not everyone finds it excruciating. mine was uncomfortable and a bit crampy but relatively pain free. I took some feminax (period pain tablets) and paracetamol beforehand

just to say i understand how you feel as i found out two weeks ago via a lap that i have one completely blocked tube (i refused a HSG after reading reviews and needed a lap anyway for endo) I don’t know why that’s my first dye test when i’ve had 4 laps! Would have been good to know sooner. anyway you’re going to be fine give it time. I know how you feel waiting for results and then being told about your tubes and then now what? Feel free to inbox me if you need support. I do have one ok tube so slightly different but if i conceive on that side i’m at risk so i don’t really know what’s the best option. Take some time for self care and try to do things that distract yourself. I spent two weeks on google and went to a very dark place but feeling much better now. Have been advised to keep trying and i’m also being referred to IVF clinic to clip the tube. You will get your baby in the end xxxxx
