Night Shift Work

Hi, I recently got my first BFP and I’m due back on shift Friday night for 6 night shifts. I can go on alternative duties once I tell management but I was waiting until my first scan. I’ve since read night shift can cause a small increased risk to miscarriage. Does anyone know about this or worked night shifts after a BFP? I wouldn’t put myself at any risk. Thank you 🤗

Hi gummy. Try not to worry too much about shift work, as it is what you do, so you’re used to readjusting all the time. Just make sure you take any prescribed medication on time, and refrain from heavy lifting. Good luck with your first scan. Diane

Thank you for your reply Diane, I did continue shifts throughout my cycle. I’ve just read today a few articles about studies that say night shift workers increase chance of miscarriage by 6.1 women in every 100? I wouldn’t want to take a risk if there is one? I can go on alternate duties at anytime. Thanks x

hiya..I work continuous nights, no option to go on day shift. I spoke to my consultant about it and he said if youre body is already used to it then their should be very little impact as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, get enough sleep etc. But youre right there are studies that say there is an increased risk so if you have the option for alternative dutiesthen I would ask about it for peace of mind xo

Thank you for your reply. I imagine there are lots of pregnant women who continue nights. But your right, if I have the option. I just didn’t want to inform work just yet. But my long time plan for the rest of my pregnancy will be day shift. I think i’ll be working nights this wkend and have managed to work a different shift week after. Then alternative duties after that. So hoping that short spell won’t cause an issue. I found out it’s the melatonin that’s disrupted which causes an issue with natural progesterone and as I am on strong progesterone decided I’m not at risk 🤷‍♀️ Xx
