Advised to take a low dose of aspirin

Hello! I am 42 and I am 16 weeks pregnant with twins. Today I have been advised by a consultant to take a low dose of aspirin because of my age, and I am expecting twins and because it is an IVF pregnancy. apparently it’s to avoid pre eclampsia and high blood pressure. Does anyone else have experience with this? Is it safe to take it? Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks

I have heard of it being taken safely in pregnancy but don’t have experience myself x

Hi I have just had my baby. I had to take it from 12 weeks to 36 weeks. It’s normal protocol for us over 40s. Helps blood flow in the placenta mainly and helps with blood pressure too.

I have a very healthy little one, no pre eclampsia or high blood pressure.

Hopefully it reassures you. Good luck with your babies xxx

Hey this seems to be the standard advice for ladies in their 40s. I'm sure your consultant wouldn't advise if it's not the right thing to do!xx

I'm in my 20's and 11 weeks pregnant. From 12 weeks my consultant wants me in asprin, it doesn't cause any issues within pregnancy even if it isnt needed x

I took it from 12 weeks until 38 or so weeks. I was 42 when pregnant and at first I was worried about it but I read up and decided to take it. All was fine and I didn’t get pre eclampsia or anything. Best wishes with your pregnancy x

I had to take this for similar risk factors as you. My daughter is fine. Lots of people take it. Just make sure you are clear about when to stop taking it pre birth especially if you’re booked in for induction or c section. Also, they’ll probably prescribe you the soluble version at first, this made me feel sick so I requested the one you just swallow and it was fine but you can actually buy it over the counter for pennies as well.

I’ve been told the same, but I’m 34. Dose is 150 from 12 weeks x

I'm 40, and 35 weeks pregnant. I'm taking aspirin since week 12, when I stopped heparin. The baby is doing fine, and no signs of pre-eclampsia - yesterday night my blood pressure was 107/77!

I took it by myself caz I had read about it. I am glad I did because I took it till I was 35 weeks. Then stopped by myself. The week I stopped I went into preenclampsia and had an emergency c section

Hi

I’m a 39 year old type 1 diabetic going through ivf and I’ve been advised to take it by both my diabetes consultant and my IVF clinic, partly due to increase the blood flow to the uterus and partly because of the high dose of estrogen I’m on (which increases risk of stroke). I’m not pregnant yet (well, as far as I know - I’m 4dp5dt so I could be!) but I can see the logic in the medical advice and I trust my doctors.

Hope this is helpful and best of luck to you and your twins! Xx

Hi... I'm 35 and I been taking baby aspirin since I started the progesterone pessaries. I did FET#2 and because I had a previous miscarriage doc told me to take it in order to improve the blood flow. I'm 7w pregnant.

Hi

Yes it’s also standard for twins. I had to take the aspirin and from 12 weeks injections to prevent blood clots and try and prevent preeclampsia. It’s a very low dose and is safe.

Good luck. Twin pregnancy is hardcore but the pay off is worth it I promise! My two are 18 weeks and it’s been a crazy ride so far.

Hi, Congratulations with your pregnancy 🎉🎉🎉. I am 43 and currently 34 weeks pregnant (ivf with egg donor) and been on low dose of aspirin since nearly the beginning of my pregnancy. I have asked different consultant and gps. They all said it was safe because it’s a low dose. I hope the can reassure you. Good luck with your pregnancy 🤰 😊xx

I’m 38 and pregnant with twins and was advised to take aspirin from week 12. This is because it’s twins and my first pregnancy so the risk score was 2. I guess if you are over 40, the score would be 3. It is safe for the babies and I think that if it helps to reduced the risk of pre-eclampsia, then it’s certainly worth it. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy. X

Hi there

I had to do exactly the same. I was 33 when I was pregnant and I think it’s just normal protocol for twins to try and prevent preeclampsia.

I didn’t have any issue with preeclampsia and gave birth to two healthy (very weighty) baby girls. Xx

Yep, I’m 42 and was advised to take it because of my age. It’s a very low dose. I had no issues with high blood pressure in pregnancy and have a healthy 9 week old.xx

Hello I’m having twins too and I have to take aspirin. Apparently it’s very common if you are having twins. 😊 P.S I’m not over 40 so don’t think it’s just an age thing. X

I was not expecting twins but I was also taking it because the gp and midwife recommended it. I was 35 and didn't suffer from preeclampsia or high blood pressure, but I think it was because I had turned 35. I had a healthy baby. Now pregnant again - also IVF, but haven't been told to take it, maybe because there was no issues in my last pregnancy.

I’m 18 weeks pregnant (32YO) and I’m taking 150mg daily as my Papp a was 0.18. A few professionals have been shocked by this but then when it has been checked apparently it is the new guidelines

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I am 44, 21 weeks pregnant and although I already take medication for my blood clotting my consultant advised baby aspirin too. It is perfectly fine.

Yes I have heard this. I actually thought NICE guidelines had changed to 150mg dose rather than low dose 75mg recently so maybe check that. I am a midwife and have loads of midwife friends that have told me this. X
