Hi

We are new to all of this and just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation to us or can give us some advice.

My partner finished 15 rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy 2 years ago and has now been cancer free for 2 years, as a result of the treatment he has lost his fertility completely, we went for his sperm test today and they found nothing.

Luckily before he started treatment he stored 2 samples which were healthy.

We are now wanting to have a baby and have been referred to a fertility specialist via our GP. How long does it usually take for the appointment to come through?

Also, how long after the first appointment do they normally wait to start treatment?

The other worry I have is that I already have a 6 year old boy from a previous relationship when I was young, I know that we are already very lucky as we have family, but we really want to extend our family and have a child of our own together. Has anyone else been accepted for IVF with previously having another child?

I know it’s good in terms of we already know I am fertile but just worried we might not qualify for funding now.

Thank you and sorry for all the questions!

Hey, I hope you are well. It all honestly depends on the clinic you visit. Every clinic is different in this matter. It usually takes more than a week to get an appointment if a clinic is popular and has many patients visiting them. The process will then take more time as well. Also since your husband has been diagnosed with a problem the clinic will take you in for IVF. Good luck to you.

I hope I’m wrong, because it seems so so unfair but I think it might still depend where you live.

From the fertility fairness website:

“ To find the details of the level of funding offered by your CCG, and whether you fit its criteria please email hannah@fertilitynetworkuk.org”

This list gives you details of the provision by CCG- fertilityfairness.co.uk/wp-... - with an increasing number of areas offering no provision on the NHS and I don’t know if cancer changes this.

Good luck!

I think its pretty universal in the UK that you won't be eligible for free treatment if one of you already has a child. They should explain everything and how you can move forward.
