Recurrent Miscarriage

2-shades-of-hope profile image

Has anybody been referred for recurrent miscarriage after IVF? Ive only had 2, but GP has referred me as we are unexplained infertility. I’ve been sent a letter for a scan at the maternity department (which is exactly the place women with recurrent miscarriages don’t want to be and there’s absolutely zero chance of me attending). Given this hospital made me miscarry publicly outside the maternity unit doors with newborns and baby balloons around me, it sadly does not surprise me 🙄Clearly my complaint has achieved nothing. Surely I don’t need another pelvic scan after about 20+, an HSG and hysteroscopy? Has anyone experienced anything more sensible from their hospitals? Thanks xx

My reoccurring mc tests were done at the fertility clinic but not after IVF, I had an appointment for fertility but we kept conceiving but losing at 12w dr said just keep the appointment even if we are pregnant anyway we lost the last on Jan 5th and app was 5 days later felt like shite but went. Had a chat got bloods and semen tests and a ultra sound to check structure that was all. All came back fine which is good but were no further forward I actually feel after 5 cycles now what just carry on im 39 no other treatments were discussed or follow up app etc We've been ttc now for 2 years.

Thank you for sharing this. That’s devastating that you were losing at 12 weeks, you’re going through such a lot and it really is unfair. I definitely get the impression that they do not understand or care about the psychological impact of these conditions. Do you have a plan for what’s next for you?

You have been through an awful experience they should have separate areas in hospitals it is so upsetting.

Our only option is to try again or stop 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hope you can get some answers the tests found nothing for us so that’s it what else do we do?

The thing is I know that they have the internal ultrasounds in the x ray department. But it would be too much to expect a sonographer to walk to a different ward. It makes me so angry the way they treat people like us. I’m sorry they didn’t give you any answers. I can see how it’s good on one hand but also so frustrating as you don’t know what else to try. And it’s hard to balance wanting to continue trying with the thought of going through more losses.

Yeah you never think you’ll have 1 mc not mind 2/3 or more I don’t know if we’ll even conceive again there’s always that too and I if we do think we will miscarry again I can’t get past that thought now and we’ll not have a baby together.

It’s so hard. I think it’s really natural to be scared for future pregnancies. Doesn’t make it easier though I know, nothing does. Xx

Hi 2-shades-of-hope. I just wanted to say, I agree it is awful having to be booked in for a scan where the babies are. Unfortunately most hospitals only have all the equipment in one area. However, perhaps if they insist on a scan, perhaps you could have it done in outpatients?? Have a chat too whether using heparin could help next time, to ensure even blood supply to womb lining and help to prevent any clotting . Just my thoughts, but I hope they can give you some answers. Hope you’ve got plenty of support, two miscarriages is more than enough.Thinking of you. Diane

Thank you diane, that’s very kind of you. I have asked GP for referral to a better hospital nearby with separate gynae scan area. I will ask about heparin, worth a try. X

Hi I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences. I've had 4mcs and self referred to local RMC after 2 (allowed over 40, otherwise 3). I was given all the standard blood tests, ultrasound of uterus /ovaries etc. and was prescribed blood thinners, prog and steroids for next to pregnancy but to no avail. Never received a diagnosis - essentially it was my age - but I wish the consultant had actually told me this straight instead of us trying for another 2 years unsuccessfully. When I first went you had to wait in same area as women having antenatal scans, which was distressing. However 4 years later they now offer scans at weekend only for EPU patients, which also makes it so much easier to organise around work.

Thank you for sharing this. It is absolutely awful to have gone through four. And very frustrating to try everything without a result. The way your hospital organise the scans now is so much better, it is good to see that there are proactive and empathetic hospital departments out there. I feel all too often limited money is given as an excuse, when in fact the resources are there and could be used, it just takes a bit of consideration and thinking outside the box. Did you decide to do further treatment?

Yes I was so happy when I found out about the weekend scans. It makes such a difference at such a difficult time. We started ivf subsequently - my profile gives more details xx

So sorry to hear your bad experience. I had to walk through the maternity unit from antenatal dept to get to early pregnancy unit after finding out about missed miscarriage at 13w scan- it was awful then had to sit in a room with other people over the moon they still had heartbeats on their scans. It was dreadful but the midwives were amazing.
