Choosing 1 or 2 embryos

Hi were in a stage where we can choose to put in 1 or 2 embryos. What are the risk and chances on putting 2 instead of 1. I would love to have twins but I also don't want to be greedy and it doesn't work out. It would be nice to be pregnant with twins but what are the chances of them surviving.

I would consider all the factors..your age, history, previous attempts, the grading of the embryos and the recommendation of the embryologist. I have only had single transfers with being under 35 but my first grade A split and I lost twins at 9 weeks, we have recently had our second single embryo transfer of a grade B. Twins are always a risk with a double transfer, but also triplets or more! If unsuccessful we will be having both our remaining grade C’s transferred together. Good luck with whatever you decide x

What does your embriologist/Dr say? It depends on a lot of things. I had 5 frosties and recommendation was 2/2/1 transfer protocol - but I'm 39 and in good health. They tend not to encourage double transfer in younger women and you have to think about your own health too.

We thought we'd love twins but then we spent 2 weeks before our first scan thinking we might actually be having twins, due to a very high HcG level, and we freaked out (we can't afford this!! where are we going to put them!!!) Guess we should have thought all that through sooner but we really weren't expecting it to work!!. So we were quite relieved when the 6 week scan showed only one had stuck. We've been very lucky and still have 3 frosties but I definitely won't be doing a double transfer again!! I guess the moral of the story is, if you put 2 in, be prepared to get 2 out. I am the same age as you and my clinic was also prepared to transfer one or two embryos- our choice.

I asked same questions of the consultant.

We were told that a double transfer creates a 15% extra chance of a pregnancy in that cycle. 1 in 4 double transfers will result in twins. I hope that helps your decision.

We had 3 embryos from our last round. I transferred one (miscarried at 5.5 weeks) and have 2 frozen. Am also facing the same decision.. to transfer one or both next time we try. It’s a toughie xx

We’re in the same boat. I’ve had 2 previous cycles and had only 1 to transfer each time during those rounds. We are currently doing our 3rd cycle. It is day 2 today and we have 2 to transfer this time but they are average quality and therefore we will transfer 2 tomorrow (day 3). If I had good quality ones I’d transfer 1. See what your embryologist advises as it depends on the quality of your embryos x

I've always transferred 2 if possible. It's a big decision as you need to weight up if you cold cope with multiples. Obviously there are health risks to yourself & the babies but I'm sure you would be well looked after by your clinic. The NHS are very against multiple pregnancies and are encouraged to only transfer one hut my private clinic always does 2 as they feel it increases the chance of pregnancy....again you have to be prepared for both to take and there is always he risk of one splitting into 2! I transferred two and got pregnant with bg twins who came very early at 24 weeks. My son passed away at 13 days and my daughter spent five months in nicu and has ongoing problems. Although not as early as mine, lots of multiples come early and there are very real and massive risks for you and the babies. I really wish I could have made a different choice.
