Is it normal to have a 5mm fetus at week 6 or 7 ?!!

Hello everybody

I am so sttressed out right now! I have had my ultrasound today and the dr measured my fetus with 5mm and he said that it should be double in size at week6 of pregnancy! I am at the start of my week7! He was so negative about it and said I have do another ultrasound by next week and if it doesnt get double in size by the next week, we should arrange an abortion! He believes that we only have 25% chance and 75% it is a misscarriage!

I was so shocked coz everything seemed normal and the sac was about 14mm I guess and as I read the 5mm size is just so normal!!

Plz if anybody has any experience or knowledge about it, share it with me! Im sooo confused about what he said! I do appreciate your replies!

Did they give you paperwork does it say CTL on measurements? X

No he just measured it by a simple vaginal ultrasound and didnt give me any papers! Is the size too small in your opinion?

They should have given you papers to say what they did scan etc I’m surprised they didn’t tbh. CTL is the crown to lump so the length of the embryo I can’t remember what my buba was at 5 weeks I will try to find all my paperwork and private mgs you I hope you are ok x

Yes maybe it is different! Oh Im so sorry that u have been through all of it!! I do wish all my bests to u too dear! Xxxxxx

It seems strange that they would suggest an abortion whilst there is still a heartbeat, irrelevant of size?

Wishing you lots of luck x

Paris1771 in reply toHollibob

Actually he didnt say anything about the heartbit! He said it is too small to c what is going on and the size should be doubled! Im so shocked actually with his suggestions and way of speaking!!

Thank u so much! xxxxx

Don’t be scared to ask for a different person the next time or to give the clinic some ‘feedback’. It might be his everyday job to him, but this is an important and scary time in your life!

Yes , just today I asked to meet another dr by the next week and hopefully I do get a good result! Sometimes they really dont understand how their opinions can affect horribly on us!!

Normally at this early stage, with such small babies, they don't worry so much about the measurements - it's too difficult to be accurate. Hope you have a different dr and different outcome from your next scan x

Actually, reading this article 5mm seems normal:

Thank u much dear! Yes as I googled alot every where was written that 5mm is normal! Do u remember yours! When could u hear the heart bit for the first time?

in reply toParis1771

I haven't heard it yet. We are not to hear until 20 weeks here. We saw what we thought was a wee flicker at the 6 week scan (basically it was a blob in a blob). At 8 week scan we definitely saw the heart flicker and the blob was starting to resemble a shape of a baby.

I really think you should get a different doctor! Xx

in reply to

Cant recall the measurements. But it's too early to make any kind of suggestions like your dr made. Xx

Thank u dear! Yes Im trying to be calm and c what will happen but honestly I cried alot today and all of my energy were gone! Just trying to recollect it again! Xxxxxx

in reply toParis1771

No wonder with the way they have spoken with you today. How awful. It's way too early to be reading anything. My clinic asked me to go for a 6 week scan really just to check that something was visible in the sack (I had an anembryonic pregnancy in April last year) and secondly to make sure it was in the right place. Beyond that it's way too early to tell. And some people don't even see anything x

He told me that the sac is there and the fetus is5mm and it is in a good place but the rest of his speaks were so weired to me! Just fingers crossed for the next week! Xxx

Oh it really make me happy! So maybe mine is normal as well! I do meet another dr next week and hope to get a great result by then! This one was a Prof today!!! But he was so strange to me!

in reply toParis1771

Very weird. Hopefully you sleep a little better tonight than you would have done. Focus on positive thoughts towards your little bean. Next week will be a new doctor who is probably much more sensible and qualified xx

I just know I saw mine at 6 weeks and it was 7mm and by week 8 it was 22mm, so it tripled in size over those 2 weeks. I'm sorry your Dr has scared you so much and I can't believe he is recommending you arrange an abortion. That's extremely brutal. If I were you I would just wait and see what happens - I really hope everything works out ok for you xxx

the first time to see my baby was at 5weeks 5 days and the CRL measured 5mm. Baby B was not even visible just a sack with nothing. Baby B was only visible at 8 weeks almost going to 9 and she was a tiny spec if i can remember. But now she is a 7 month old baby. Your doc is a miserable human being to already start talking about abortion and miscarriage.

Thank u so much! It is so great! I really dont understand him! When we met him and I started to speak that I dont feel nausea a lot, just a little bit in the afternoons,he cut me and said it is better that first we do the ultrasound to c if it is a misscarriage or it is alive! He made me sick just at the beginning!! It is good that I wont meet him next week and hope everything goes on great for me by then!

Thank u sooo much for your text! U dont know what a great help they r to lift me up in this hard situation! Xxxxxx

I was told that 7mm at 7 weeks was normal and they grow really rapidly at this stage so I would say it all looks and sounds positive x

hi, i just had a TV scan at 6+1 weeks and ours was 3mm, saw the heartbeat flicker and they said all was normal!! I think your doctor has dates/sizes mixed up somehow!! i would ring and ask for a repeat scan with someone else to re-assess and reassure. Xxx

Paris1771 profile image

Mine was5+2 buthe didnt c any heart beat flicker or something! Hope everything is normal!

Yes I asked for another dr and Im not visiting him anymore! xxxx

embiemomma profile image
embiemomma in reply toParis1771

they told me anything under 6 weeks is difficult to detect a heartbeat. Mine was a tiny flicker and they said if I'd come a few days earlier it probably wouldn't have been detected. I don't think there's anything wrong with yours! Xx

Yes I expected to hear that is normal and just got too much stress so we forgot to ask any more reasons for his opinion! Just hope it is a normal situation and to get a good result by next week! xxxx

I know at my clinic they expect CRL (crown rump length) to be about 1cm by week 7. There process is to reach in a week then if all is ok by 8 weeks they continue you as normal, however if its smaller, not grown much or reduced in size they send you to EPAU to be re-scanned again. Personally from experience I would say be prepared for what may happen but who really knows at this stage which way it will go? I hope all works out for you and your little one proves these docs wrong.xxx

Yes they r not! Thank u so much dear! Xxxxx

Ahhh thats awful to hear normally they give you 2 weeks to see growth in the uk, make sure you ask questions you need answering next week did they not ask your last period date? At 5w its tiny usually with no heatbeat hopefully there will be growth at your next scan I know its horrible waiting not knowing. I hope it all goes well for you. xx

Paris1771 in reply to

Thank u so much! No actually he didnt ask about the period but I told him that I guess it started on31th of Dec! I dont knowwhy he was insisting on abortion but I have no other choice except for waiting! Im counting every single hour actually for the next week scan and hope this much stress doesnt make it worse for the baby! xxxxx

Hi :)

I am so sorry you were told such thing :(

I just checked my paper work. At 6w + 5d my embryo was 6.47mm and it was considered just 2 days behind, but completely normal and healthy size wise.

Sadly I lost that pregnancy but due to a complete different reason.

Best of luck xx

Hi dear

Im so sorry for your lost!

Actually mine should be 5week and 1or 2 days by yesterday and 5 mm could be normal for it!

Thank u so much for your time to checking your doc! Wish u all the best on your life in whatever place u r! xxxxxx

Hi dear Lianna

It is really inspiring to hear that! They can double in size sometimes in just a week! Hope mine try to reach the accepted level by the next week as well! Xxxxx

in reply toParis1771

Yeah definitely, they do grow very quickly! These measurements are the size they should be at that size as they dated me on those scans too, early pregnancy is such a trying time and there's not much you can do other than wait, try not to read in to things too much xxxx
