Confused about Ubiquinol/CoQ10. What your consultants say?

Hello,

my first IVF consultation is months away, however, it seems that the sooner you start with supplements, the better. I am already on a pre-conception multi-vitaminic, extra Vitamin D (I am deficient), and I am now wondering whether Ubiquinol/CoQ10 can make a difference. My AMH was 2.2 ng/ml in July (which I believe should be fine with my age, 35yo).

On "It starts with the egg" the author seems to stress a lot on it, however, checking the scientific literature I can see only a) results on male infertility and sperm production, b) results which show no difference, and c) results in dubious journals.

What your consultants advised? I am fine with the fact that it is not really harmful in general but getting some medical advice would help me decide.

Thanks xxx

I was told by consultant not to take anything except Vitamin D and folic acid, I did try Q10 for around 6 weeks and then stopped. For my next cycle, I'm not sure what to do either, to take them or not! xx

I would say that consultants should know better but let's see what more people (and their consultants) have to say!

My consultant says there is no research to show it works x

Wondering whether to buy it and take it anyway but it’s quite pricey

Mostly, it could have an opposite effect (leave alone the money wasted). Let's see what more people (and their consultants) have to say!

My consultant says it won’t do any harm but they don’t think anything of it - but I hear people taking it all the time so there must be some truth???

All reading the same book? One (unsure) opinion reinforcing the other?

But if your consultant says that it won’t do any harm... I wonder about doses...

I asked about doses but as they don’t recommend it she had no idea

What do you think Diane Arnold?

I’m taking 600 mg of ubiquinol only took for one month feel fine has to be in your system for at least 3 months don’t think there’s side affects with ubiquinol. Just read up about and it and watched some you tube videos. I’ve had 2 mmc and want to super charge my eggs.

What was your consultant's opinion?

I don’t have one

After my first round, my new clinic asked me to not take it so I have not.

Did they say why?

What is your consultant’s opinion?

in reply toMofM

Im not having treatment in the UK now so not under my consultant. We are going to Cyprus instead. I have read up on supplements and followed Zita West etc. From what i understand Ubiqinol is an antioxidant and helps protect cells against free radicals. I didn't take it with prev 2 cycles but trying it for my next one as heard good reviews/ outcomes of ivf etc xx

I saw a fertility nutritionist. Got 1 good grade blastocyst on first cycle and then took CoQ10 on second and had 4 excellent ones. My consultant also had said she’d head good things about it. So it might work!

I’m PCOS and I took Ubiquinol 300mg every day for 6 months. I felt great on it and got 13 eggs after collection. In my 2ww now with 5 frozen. Who knows without it maybe I would have got exactly the same result but I won’t know. I just wanted to take everything going!

I also took;

Alpha-lipoic acid 600mg

Pregnacare conception tablets

Lion heart omega oil

Folate 5MTHF thorne

Vitamin D 2000iu

Did you discuss these supplements with your consultant? What was his/her opinion?

Finger crossed for you :)

They didn’t really have an opinion. NHS just let you get in I think. I did see a fertility accupunturist and she recommended these also.

Get ‘on’ with it I meant to say!

After my first failed cycle we were both advised by the consultant to take 200mg Co Q10 alongside the general supplements we were already taking. We were not aware at that time there were 2 versions so took standard co Q10 for several months. We then switched to ubiquinol version after reading 'it starts with the egg'. About to start next cycle so hoping for improved results! Good luck with your treatment x
