Do IVF clinic check iron levels?

Hello ladies, I just wondered if anyone has had issues with low iron levels? I had a blood test that says mine are 22ug/L. My GP said normal is 15-200ug/L and said I "might" want to take an iron tablet. But Dr Google says you'll have difficulty conceiving/retaining a pregnancy if it's under 40ug/L. I was already having iron in my Pregancare/Boots pre-pregnancy vits. But I've found out it doesn't absorb well with calcium (which is also in the vit) or if you drink tea, milk etc. I'm taking Floradix liquid iron an hour before breakfast, then the pregna-vit at lunch and have cut out tea. My low iron symptoms were sleepiness (8.30pm especially if the TV's on)!, exceptionally brittle nails, hair that keeps falling out (I have a lot of long dark/think hair so no danger of baldness but it makes hoovering a frequent need). Have your iron levels been checked during your IVF cycles? I'm a newbie - first appointment to get pack of jabs at beg March. Also on Ubiquinol CoG10 and Omega 3...getting progressively obsessed :-).

Hi,

I don't have much to offer info wise except that I have not had my iron levels checked, I'm on my first cycle of IVF.

Wishing you lots of luck xx

Hey! I, like you, have iron levels near the bottom range of “normal.” They tested mine beforehand as part of the standard bloods, but nobody suggested I take iron supplements - in fact, my GP suggested that I didn’t because it might cause me stomach discomfort. Also I couldn’t nail down where they got that range; just because it’s what the population average reflects doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best for you. I’m pretty sure mine is lower because I don’t eat meat, and I feel healthier as a result. Ultimately I didn’t take any extra iron, and, glory to God, my first round was successful. Best wishes for you!! xx
